Immersion heater - advice please!

Please can you help me settle an argument with my OH? Our gas supply has been disrupted and is not likely to be fixed for quite a few days (burst main), so for the first time in years we're having to resort to using immersion heater for hot water.
OH says it's more economic to leave it switched on all the time, but I'm sure I read somewhere (on here?) that's not the case. We could get by ok by boiling kettles during the day and since both the dishwasher and washing machine are cold fill, the only real need for hot water from the tank is for a couple of showers in the morning. Surely if we just flicked the switch for a couple of hours before going to bed, that would be cheaper than leaving it on all day and night?? The tank looks well insulated to me, therm is set to 60 and it's a 3kw element.
Looks like we'll be saving a bit on gas this month, but don't want elec bill going through the roof (especially as we may well have to resort to using some form of electric heater as well if the weather forecast is accurate)!!

Leaving the immersion on continuously will cost you a small fortune.
Yes it will cut in and out by the thermostat, but you will be paying to maintain the tempertature of the water at the desired temperature.
Much better to heat the water up to the desired temperature just before you use it - just like when you boil a kettle."Now to trolling as a concept. ....
