I had problems with my pre-payment gas meter at the weekend. British gas were out and have changed the meter. My current gas card no longer works with the meter, and I have £20 on the card. I also lost £3.77 from the old meter when they changed it. I have a few questions:

1. I put £20 on my gas card on friday night, and now my new meter wont accept the card. I need to get a new card, so have I lost the £20 thats on the old card? Is there a way of transferring the money onto the new card?

2. I had £3.77 on the old meter, but this hasnt been transferred onto the new one. Is there a way of getting this money back?

Cheers.

My understanding is the card needs to be 'paired' (inserted) with the meter before it can be used to vend. Therefore you need to contact your supplier about the £20. You may have to send them the card so they can check there is still £20 on the card which they can then refund you. As to the £3.77, I would have thought the engineer would have transferred it so again check with your supplier.

When they do this the engineer should transfer all the details from the old meter to the new one so you wouldn't have lost the £3.77 and you could use the money on your old card.
If (s)he couldn't do this they should have phoned in to get you a new card.

You can call 0800 048 0303 to check this (any time), and get them to send you a new card and the £23.77 you lost if they've not already.

If you can check screen 32 and tell them what it says it will help them get all the details right.

Regarding the crd on which you have 20 notes,,did this work in the old meter? If so,what was the fault with the old meter which led to it being exchanged?

If the card still worked in the old meter it should have been possible to transfer that £20 to the old meter in the normal way, download the old meter, fit new meter then upload the details to the new meter and utilise the existing card.

Of course it all depends what was wrong with the old meter. It may have been totally inoperable and therefore it may not have been possible to do this operation.

Regardless, your £20 is safe. you just havent got it yet!

Your £20 purchase is recorded by the big machine. you might not get it back as BG might retain it toward any debt you owe !

I dont speak for any agent or supplier, just my own view :)
