An interesting dilemma
I have had a Nationwide Flexaccount for 20 years. I have written to them (following the article here on reclaiming bank charges) for all charges made to my account in the past six years. However - I am also aware that if I reclaim these charges (many have been punitive on Nationwide's part), then they will probably close…

Advantage Gold at £12 per month
A friend of limited financial means, and easily fobbed off, recently went into a Natwest branch with the intention of opening a simple bank account (eg a "basic bank account"). It turns out he opened, without realising it, an account which charges £12 per month, the Advantage Gold account. I got him to call the Customer…

HSBC - encouraging debt?
I have a current account with a cash card but I was looking for one with a debit card attached to it. As I am disabled and cannot work it has been hard to find a bank who will offer me a "full" account. Does anyone happen to know what the bar-code is for, that can be found on cheque books on each cheque stub just under the binding. I am about to discard a number of old cheque book stubs and am keen to avoid any chance of identity theft. Do the bar codes identify me or the bank or are they just a stock control number ?…

Nationwide - couple of questions
Hi, Does anyone know what type of card you get with a Nationwide current account, is it a Visa debit or something else? Also, do they ever offer an account opening incentive (cashback, freebies etc), as if so I may as well wait a while. If they never do this I will go ahead and get one opened now. Many thanks.

First Direct -why so high at £1500 monthly payin ??
I'm surprised that First Direct has set its threshold so high at £1500 monthly payin to avoid paying monthly charge. (ignoring other ways of avoiding charge like having 2nd product). We know many people are closing their accounts. But they will lose a LOT of new business as people look elsewhere. This charge will stop many…

Cashflow Software / Spreadsheet
Hi there, I've been tracking my finances for years using a fairly basic Excel spreadsheet which forecasts my cashflow in each account. I create rows for all the recurring transactions to the end of the year (pay, rent, bills, etc.) then I can see how much money should be in each account on any given date. I can then use…
