bar-codes

Does anyone happen to know what the bar-code is for, that can be found on cheque books on each cheque stub just under the binding.
I am about to discard a number of old cheque book stubs and am keen to avoid any chance of identity theft. Do the bar codes identify me or the bank or are they just a stock control number ?
Thanks
Ted

I'm not sure, but I always burn any sensitive personal data anyway i.e. cheque books.
To be safe, just destory them completey and I am sure someone will come along and answer your question0 -
The bar code in the binding margin is scanned by the machinery that collates the individual cheque book leaves during the binding operation. It's purpose is to ensure that each book contains the correct leaves, in the correct order and of the correct number. It is not linked to the account number in any way.0

The bar code on the bottom off the cheque has the same information as is printed on the cheque (account number, sort code etc) in machine readable form. As its no more than is already on the cheque there is no security risk.
