Natwest "ONLINE" banking

I don't understand internet banking. Ok..stupidly I lost my customer number (but knew my password, secret question, sort code and account number).... so for months I've been putting off online banking as I knew it would involve a lengthy phone call.
I decided to bite the bullet last week and went on the natwest site, and hurrah there was an email section where you could request the info to be sent out to you... efficient so I thought..
e-mail this morning ...
"However in your particular situation I would advise that a better way
forward would be for you to call the Online Helpdesk where a member of staff
will be able to offer assistance and enable you to rejoin the online service
in the quickest way possible.
The Helpdesk number for OnLine Banking is 0845 60 50 789 (UK calls charged
at local rates) "
What "particular situation" - I followed the instructions for people who had lost their customer number.....so why do we have to ring up as well? I don't get it..so much for being convenient and online....
