Default The cost of mot and how to help your self

Hi My name is Phil
I work for a local independent mot testing station in upper Holloway north London and i pride myself as a fair and honest mot tester, you say that there are cut price mot test stations out there but cheep is not always best remember the hidden cost of retest, we at out test station do not charge for retest with 10 working days whether the work is carried out at the test station or not, but there are many simple items on the test sheet that the presenter can help them selves, items like make sure that all lights work, water in screen wash ,make sure all seat belts are accessible {no need to remove child seats} Tyre inflated and with more that the legal limit of 1.6mm thread dept and even check the oil level, if no oil the emission test can't be completed ,you would be surprised how many cars fail just for these items, i would do my level best to make a car pass but all the little items cost time and time is money in this day
so prepare before an mot its time well spent and always check out the garage that you intend to visit ,ask about, ask friends.
the tester has no vested interest in whether the car passes or fails, when the tester is testing your car he is not working for the garage he is working on behalf of VOSA
to find out about council test stations ring up your local mot area office to get tel & address or search the web

i would recommend you do a service as it my experience as an mot tester that most newer cars are not looked after as well as older ones and newer cars seem to have more problems when it comes to mot time so by having your car maintained regularly is money well spent, and yes your local mot centre should be able to deal with normal servicing

hey all, I am due for a MOT after my current certificate runs out on 25th oct. I am thinking of using the council run one in wandsworth, just got a few questions for anybody who has used the MOT service in andsworth:

1) how much do they charge for a MOT?

2) did it take long for an appointment to be arranged?

3) If it fails the MOT, what next?

I was really worried about getting my MOT done and couldn't find any council run ones locally. I ended up going to a place called Michaels Garage (11 Balmoral Gr, London, N7 9NQ, 020 76077380). It was a friendly old greek guy who owned the place and he put my car through (for £55) and even changed a brake light at no extra cost. Highly recommended!

Bad news! On booking my car today into the Waltham Forest council MOT centre in Walthamstow, London, I was told that the council was preparing to close down the centre. I'm not sure at what stage the decision is, but I'd suggest to everyone if they support these independent council MOT centres then should they use the Waltham Forest council MOT centre to try and reduce its chances of closing. Even write an email or letter to the Council as well might help.

Anyone living in South London I definitley recommend using the Wandsworth centre at the Frogmore Complex. Booked it late Thursday, went in Friday morning. Friendly staff, told me to leave the car and go back in an hour, went back and the MOT had been done, passed and was ready to go. Highly recommend them.

Default Ponders End

Hi, could anyone advise me where to go in the Ponders End/Enfield area? I'm pretty new to the place, and I'm not sure where all the centres are! Any help is very much appreciated.

Default Staples corner, brent cross/hendon/cricklewood/golders green

I went to PITSTOP who are on the Staples Corner Roundabout. They were great. They only do MOTs just like the council centres, so also have no vested interest in failing you. On the contrary, I realised that they would rather pass you to save themselves the extra work from a retest. They charge £54 and retests are free within 10 days.

My car hadn't had an MOT for a year (was in garage) and it is 8 years old, but still passed. They just put me 2 notes on my paperwork saying I needed to deal with an oil leak and one tyre that was near the legal minimum, but the car passed anyway.

The Rutlish Auto Care Centre (SW19 1LY) isn't a council test centre - it is a standard garage who do repairs etc.

Although I am very pleased to report a swift pass from them with no nasty surprises and no advisories

The closest council run centre is the Wandsworth one - SW18 1EY

I can also vouch heavily for the Tower Hamlets centre at E14 0JJ - very good service up there.

Based on this recommendation I also tried Michaels Garage. Top marks! I've got nothing but praise - excellent service, very good value and friendly staff. I'll definitely be going back, no question about it.
