    what happened at stage 1 & 2?

Was the cable modem plugged into the wan port of router when you went through that step?

you can get the info by connecting direct to cable modem, and start, run, cmd

    ipconfig

But, these details may change when you switch off the cable modem, so really the router should autodetect them from the cable modem every time you switch it on.

If you have XP, use WPA-PSK/tkip encryption instead of WEP
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

How to configure internet access on a NETGEAR router for DSL connection
    http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101668.asp

Dont enter any details, see if the wizard finds them.

Sounds to me like you have not connected the cables correctly or you do not have a service.
  • what ever happened to plug and play?

cable is purely plug in and thats it.

just do a hard rest of your router.

I lost internet connection, and had to totally unplug the router to get back on.

I am going to start over again and see what happens..

Try changing the DNS server settings to 4.2.2.1 and 4.2.2.2 (or 3,4,5 or 6 as the end number). Those are open DNS servers, and are usually quite fast. Alternatively try 208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220 which is the opendns servers (see http://www.opendns.com)

If your router is trying to look to an external server for its setup details, this will certainly help, but usually these things set themselves up. You could try a complete reset of the router...

1.) Disconnect all cables from router, including power.
2.) Wait at least one minute.
3.) Push reset button in and hold it in.
4.) While holding reset button in, plug in the power. (it will be easier with two people, it is very difficult to hold in the reset button while at the same time trying to plug in the power connection.)
5.) Hold and wait for the router to completely initialize, approx. 40-50 seconds

Also, the manual for that router is here http://kbserver.netgear.com/products/WGR614v6.asp just in case you need it.

I have just connected the router exactly as the wizard describes, and get the same screen asking me to input the IP details..

I am a wireless virgin, so I haven't a clue how to change numbers or anything.

Getting really p****d off with this now!

When I plug the blue cable into the back of the PC my Internet goes off.

Is there any way I can set it up without doing this?

No you need to set-up the router via the Ethernet cable.

If I plug the blue cable(is this the ethernet one?) into the back of the PC I lose internet connection..

    Why is this?

Is it possible my PC/Modem setup is not ethernet?

    Try this:

Click Start, then Settings, then Control Panel

    Double-click Network and dial-up Connections

Right click on the "Local Area Connection" icon, and select "Properties" from the drop down menu

The "Local Area Connection Properties" window will now open. Left mouse click (once) on the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" listing and then click "Properties"

Once the "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window has opened you need to select "Obtain an IP address automatically" and select "Obtain DNS server address automatically"

    Then click "OK"
