    Hello,
I'm very familiar with shopping around, price comparing and bargain hunting for my insurance. Renewal date is not until 1st April but I like to be prepared. Of course this means that I haven't yet received my renewal price from my current provider.
However, in the last year my husband has started building himself some road bikes. One of these is already insured via current provider but now he has 2. Well, 3 if you include his mountain bike.
He has already looked into separate bike insurance via specialist bike insurers and it would cost an arm and a leg. He already has public liability insurance through his membership with a cycling club so that's not an issue either.
I just wanted to see whether anyone knew of any insurers that might specialise in insuring bikes as well as regular buildings and contents cover that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg.
I feel I'm slightly biased against paying high amounts as I'm such a saver and also they're not my bikes, so I have less of a vested interest. However, I am the keeper of the finances and if hubby wants his bikes covered outside the house (so only one at a time there) and inside the house I need to make sure I don't let him down. He seems to be more concerned about somebody breaking in and stealing his bikes.

Anyway I think I'm digressing. Does anyone have any experience in insuring expensive road bikes as a specified item on a regular house insurance policy?
    Any advice gratefully received.

Try looking at "Mid Net" Home Insurance quotes which are aimed at the more affluent and tend to offer better premiums / cover on expensive bikes.

The M&S policy used to be good for high value bikes as do the Axa Mid Net policy.

It would be prudent for your husband to document the parts of his bike if he's custom making bikes and where possible keep receipts / have evidence of purchase.

Have a read of any restrictions for the bike eg any security precautions when at home or away from home and make sure he abides by them

Has anyone had this offer in a recent mailshot with their post
    .www.homeserve.com/insurance/plumbing-and-drainage-plus

Small print tells you it will rise to £96 next year if no claims made.

The insurance is underwritten by Aviva ( previously Aegeus )

I have had a similar supply pipe insurance from Homeserve which didn't cover as much.

Can't help being suspicious as to why they're looking for customers, and whether it's only in Southern Waters area.

I would take it if I thought it was a genuine offer as you can cancel at any time.

It's genuine, it applies to the whole of the UK, and there's no particular catch - provided you cancel before the following year kicks in at the much higher rate.

Reasonably wide cover, with a few exclusions such as showers, and a very low lead-in price. I've used it, and can recommend it.

Thanks for your reply. The next hurdle is that it's only on offer to new customers and I expect they will go by the property address even if I get it through another person/different bank/etc.
My current Pipe insurance is due on 27th March and is £85( and in my OH's name) so it would be great to save that much. Is there a way round this ?

I believe it's possible to take this out as a new customer (a requirement, as you say) for the same address with a different person (including spouse etc) signing up for it.

I haven't tried it (yet) but according to comments on HUKD it's possible to do this. Worth a try - let us know how it goes. :)

    Kind Regards

No it's not possible, I just tried it and although I gave alternative details because it's the same property they won't do it.
I applied online and got an email asking me to phone them which I did.
I pointed out that it was not the same policy but the bloke said because it had some of the same elements I could not have the deal!

Thanks - it's certainly not worth more than the £6 pa they charge to try to lure people in.

They jack it up hugely after the first year (and even more if you've had the cheek to claim) but a quick phone call will result in them offering to reduce it to you as a 'valued customer'! Probably down to £39 with a £50 excess per claim - and still not worth it, partly because you're unlikely to be able to claim, and partly because it's far too expensive even at the reduced price.

Anyone recommend a good insurance company for the above, our greatest concern is the contents,we recently had an accident when decorating our home ( bungalow ) we are both 71 years old, my hubby was carrying a tin of white runny paint to another room, what he did not know he was leaving a trail like a snail had been across the carpet, we have not made any claims for years with any accident with any company,we are now with Ageas, but they are treating us if we are criminals with not wanting to pay out
