  • Shame the eBuyer widescreen model is no longer available. Anyone know of a cheap widescreen unit that can run TomTom or iGo?

How about traffic updates or is that being a bit optimistic? ;)

My old TomTom ran through a Palm organiser and I've not been able to upgrade maps for ages so it was time to buy a new one. Looked around and decided that small is beautiful and went for the TomTom One. Tesco had it at a good price ten days ago and I got the Europe one with rds traffic alerts. On the plus side, it's brilliant. Clear, lots of new features which I love like the speed camera alerts and the options to display the current speed limit and to bleep when I exceed it. It finds the signal fast (my old one sometimes took ten minutes) even indoors and on the train. I am also very impressed with the rds traffic alerts (no subscription necessary) and the option to minimise delays when there is a jam ahead. For £19.99 I bought a two for one box with a case inside and cables to charge the TomTom from the mains -- bit pricey, but I wanted the case. The new holder is great too, very compact, though mine did break and Tesco are sending me a new one, so am a bit wary to see if this will be a persistent problem.

BUT -- and it is a huge but. You can't add your own POI categories and even adding new POIs is a bit convoluted as you have to go through the map correction menu. I've managed to transfer via the computer the POI categories I used before (eg, personal and work destinations) but the map correction menu doesn't see them and if I need new ones, I have to create them on the old TomTom and then transfer the ov2 file to the new TomTom. It's crazy. This functionality is basic to sat navs and I would never have bought the One had I known that it won't let me add new POIs. TomTom's website doesn't warn you about this and until recently when you went to the support pages there was a FAQ about how you added POIs. It's no longer there, but there is still no warning that you can't do it.

As you can imagine, I am rather upset about this but presume there is not much I can do about it except to persist with my very convoluted work-around. But I hope this post helps someone avoid the same mistake.

I just bought one from my local tesco store. reduced to £65 tomtom XL Classic 30-series. They had a few on the shelf. Not sure if other stores are doing it?

    My store is Enfield.

So does this mean I could NOT download and add the Tesco store finder POI to the TomTom One? Have it on old TomTom 300, rather useful.

Are you sure, ive used the last few versions of TomTom for PDAs (5+6+7) and they were always easy to add personaly POI on the device itself

Isn't there a "Manage POIs" option in preferences ?

You can add POIs through the map as well by clicking the button that looks like the blue cursor thing.

well, i have read thro the thread and have reached no decision as to which satnav to buy.
with work, i used to have tomtom1, which was fine but work decided on this. plus i have discovered there is a lot more choice on the market!!

I am looking for UK but if ROI / EU for not much more then I guess worth an extra few quid?
I want the most up-to-date maps and also the cheapest or FREE updates?
Pref 4" screen for ease but not essential as long as i can zoom in/out to view.
    Under £70.
(if bluetooth, camera detection etc then bonus but not essentail).

dont want the dead cheapies as hope this will last me a couple of years :)
    cheers in advance

You can download new ov2 files and add it to the maps folder using Windows Explorer and then the TomTom One 30 series will find it, so you're OK for Tesco etc. But there is not a 'manage POI' option in preferences. I can add new POIs to TomTom installed categories by making them a favourite and then going via the map corrections menu to add missing POIs. But that doesn't find, for example, the Tesco ov2. To put a new Tesco store in, I have to go to my old TomTom, add it via the manage POI option there and then transfer across the updated ov2 file. It is mad -- which is why I say 'beware'. I've e-mailed TomTom and they say the functionality to add new POI categories does not exist in my One. And that Q&A no longer displays when you look up my One. But I am sure it used to be there. I have e-mailed them again but am not very hopeful of a reply.

Has anyone else gone for this one, who would be happy to swap thoughts and ideas?

I trialled mine yesterday for the first time and have mixed impressions. The directions seem clear, but can change within a few feet! "Turn left at roundabout", then moments later "Turn right"!

The speed alerts sound an alarm even when the unit shows me at 4 mph BELOW the posted speed!

Satellite aquisition seems to take some while aswell.

  • Saw this Sat nav deal today on Halfords website for TomTom ONE V3 Classic Sat Nav - Western Europe £92.99 with the option of a half price cae and charger pack at £12.23.

It's reserve online and pay instore, no delivery available.

Having searched the web for an hour or so it seems to beat the price of Amazon and Ebuyer European Tom Toms but is v3 not v4.

I'm not able to post the link but worth checking out on Halfords website.
