I think this is going to get harder to compare with even BT getting into VOIP
http://www.btbroadbandvoice.com/bbv/brochureware/what_does_it_cost.html
can be set up with a standard phone via a router so no need to have the PC on and has it's own telephone number so you can be called direct, I assume others will start doing this so then you will have to compare fixed line/hardware voip/software voip against each other
I suppose with the unbundling of BT's local loop then someone might Bulldog may drop the requirement for a phone line (and associated line rental ) removing that from the pricing equation as well as ALL your calls could go over your broadband, as in the thread for VOIP where you use sipgate for incoming calls via a geographic number and Voipbuster for all outgoing calls (for free currently for all uk fixed line calls and some international)Ex forum ambassador

Is the idea to sign up with CPS provider "Just Dial" to get free eve + w/e calls and use call1899 during the day?
How can you override a CPS provider? And can you still make calls through BT?Dagobert0 -

dial 1280 to put your calls through BT0 -

Yes, sorry I should have made a better post. If you sign up for someone as your CPS all calls with go through them ie Just Dial, then if you sign up for 1899/18866/18185 you then dial the appropriate number before the full number of the person you want to dial and the call will be billed by them.
If you want to revert to BT you dial 1280.
If you have family that you think won't dial the pre number like 1899, have a look at the thread regarding the Orchid Dialer which is a great little box that does the "extra" dialing for you at the appropriate times.

edited to add, if you have problems signing up for 1899 please have a read of this thread here and you will find all the relevant links in there too0 -
On the Call Plans page of the JustDial website it states a 5p minimum call charge applies. If this is correct then surely just using call1899 by itself is cheaper for evening/weekend calls.
Anyone know?0 -
Dear Tree-Bee
The minimum call charge does not apply to the Free UK evening and weekend calls which are totally free with no connection charge (not to be confused with 18866/1899 which charge a connection fee and then 0p/minute.

Hi
Just signed up to this JustDial Lite thing, I'm already on 1899.
A couple of things: It doesn't say anywhere on the website about how to divert back to BT, where did we find out that you dial 1280?
Also, any idea how you cancel if JustDial are crap? Just e-mail them?0 -

In fact I think BT told me about 1280 when I first used another company for my calls.0
