  • Reviving this thread in Feb 2011 -- Bought a Haier from Comet just under 2 years ago, but have been working abroad so the thing has only had 6 months use. And yes, the spin stopped working very soon after we bought it -- but intermittently, at first, so it wasn't clear whether it was a machine fault or just that we had too many clothes in there and they were making the drum unbalanced. So, went abroad for 8 months, came back, same problem only more so. Phoned Comet -- contrary to what others have said, I found their customer service people unhelpful and obstructive, though polite. Flatly refused to send an engineer out unless I paid for the visit, even if it turned out the fault was with the machine -- over 120 quid for the visit. All my repeating of "Sale Of Goods Act" was met with "We work with Trading Standards and everything we tell you is watertight -- we may have sold you a faulty machine but you have to pay for our man to come and fix it". I spoke to the local Citizens Advice, who said that Comet's response was not correct, but Comet won't budge. The only option I have would be to take them to court, which is obviously out of the question. My conclusions:-

    1. Beware of Haier
    2. Avoid Comet

PS: I saw somewhere that the "not spinning" problem may be due to Haier fitting the wrong circuit boards (continental ones) to machines sold in the UK. According to what I read, continental boards are designed to work on slightly lower mains voltage, and may malfunction on UK mains voltage. No idea if that's true, but it sounds kinda plausible.
  • Do not buy these washing machines, they are terrible. Mine is just out of warranty, Haier don't want to know, neither do Argos. Argos will not even reply to emails. I am thinking about direct action at the store, as customers need to know that both companies have terrible customer relations.
  • These machines are pure unadulterated rubbish. The one we have throws off the drum pulley at regular intervals. As an Electrical Engineer i do my own repairs and with this build quality there is no way on earth that pulley will stay on. All that holds it in place is a single serrated dome headed bolt that is fastened by an allen key, it is impossible for it to stay in place because of the tub motion, i.e clockwise and anti clockwise. I have tried using a star washer and a spring washer under the bolt, neither is a long term cure. I have now drilled the dome off centre and hammered in a roll pin, it will never come off again. Comet must be questioned for selling and recommending such rubbish.
  • I brought one 3 weeks ago from Comet. In coomon with all the other members it conked out, jumped across the utility room when it spun come up with error 7 motor failure but also the drums seems to to have gone wonky as the rubber round it has distorted.
phoned the service number and reported the fault. I expressed my dissappointment at the failure after such a short time and asked could thy replace the machine. I was told they would not arrange to replace untill an engineer had inspected, the next available appointment was in 4 days I reluctantly agreed to wait for an engineer but the following day had a text telling me the appointment had been cancelled and they would call when the parts arrived. What parts? no one had inspected the machine plus I was unwilling to accept a repair on such a new purchase. I phoned the service number and told them all this, they were very unhelpful and said the person I hd phoned originally had done a diagnostic over the phone and had ordered the parts, therefore I must have agreed to a repair or he wouldn't have done this. I assured him that I had been told the engineer would come and then I would be offered a repair, replacement or refund. They didn't seem to believe me and said someone from the original department would have to call me back. No one did for over an hour so I decided to go to the store and demand a replacement. It worked! I have to say the Northampton Comet store were very helpful and agreed an exchange without any arguement, I had also told them I had read these comments on this web site and didn't want another Haier machine. So thanks to all for the warnings otherwise I would have just asked for a like for like replacement. Hopefully the Hoove rmachine I am expecting will be more reliable
  • Ah, not just mine then. I've noticed the drum wobbles up and down while spinning, or rather, while it attempts to spin, so my stuff always comes out too wet. Sadly my landlord is a skinflint so I don't see him authorising a replacement.
  • We had an emergency today that shook the whole family up. Our Haier AA washing machine, after working faultlessly for 4 years (well, it had a new motor just after we got it), started smoking and then caught fire with accrid smoke everywhere. We had to pull it out into the garden. We were very lucky, if we had turned it on and then gone out, it could have at least killed our dogs (the fumes) and at worst burnt the house down. We have photos of the machine....the front where the control panel was, burnt out. It was terrifying and an experience my gf will not forget....that said we were lucky as it could have been much much worse.

PLEASE, don't do what we used to, that is, turn the washing machine on and then go out.
  • Hello

i ran into that same problem with my washing machine, but guess what, your washer is FINE !
It happened that you didn't put enough laundry in your washing machine, so you got that error in order to protect the machine.

    The Fix :
    remove the laundry
press the power button for 5 seconds ( it will do some sort of reset of the software )

And voila, washing machine fixed for 0€

It's too bad they haven't put the tip in the user manual...

    enjoy the freebie.
    pat.

As every post on here seems to be overwhelmingly negative, I just thought I'd post with a counter example.

12 years ago I got given a Haier washing machine second hand from a friend who'd had it about 2 years but had moved into a house that came with with a better washing machine. I'd just bought a house, and so he gave it to me free of charge so it wasn't cluttering up their shed any more.

It was very basic, just an oldschool programme dial, an on/off button, half load and another button I never did figure out what it did, but I presumed it was a "less hot" cycle. Anyway, I was expecting it to die within a year or two and just took it to tide me over until I could afford a better one as I had loads of other "first house" expenses to deal with.

Anyway, it lasted 12 years and finally failed this week, seemingly with a broken bearing on the drum - I can't even rotate it by hand. But up until this point, I've not had a single problem with it!

I wouldn't normally have commented about it, but after googling the name and finding almost universal hatred for it here, I felt duty bound to offer a counter balance. True, I might have just been lucky. It's quite possible that the newer machines aren't as well built as their older ones. But clearly, they can be reliable too, and I just wanted to reassure all the worried people that have bought them that they might actually last after all!

Having said that, I'm probably still going for a different brand this time just because I can afford to get one with more features now... :)

Had my Haier silver washing machine for 4 years and only had some problems with my daughters bobbles getting stuck in the filter (I really need to check pockets more) and clothes coming out sopping wet cause of it, I sorted it out myself with a flooded kitchen (cause I was stupid enough not to realise I would need more than a couple of buckets) and an hour drying my floor with towels later all sorted lol. Since then runs great. I think it was only £229. or somthing like that at the time I remember it being the cheapest silver one in Argos at that time.
p.s since my first house 13 years ago , I've had 8 washing machines, this one has lasted the longest, my worse was a hoover brand although It was used when I got it so i had it for about 3 months before it kaput.
Need to get rid of my Yankee Candle Habit, Not very money saving of me :)
