We have a persistent spammer on here the so called free petrol who has unfortunately spammed mse for the last 2-3 weeks every day and used about 30 odd aliases now, and over 200 posts. Its these sort of cretins I love to see banned permanently [in fact I go further than that but it wouldn't be very nice to say here]. We do get quite a few spammers most dont come back, and we do get few pyramid ones although that seems to not be as bad now as they get reported to the relevant sites

Its a shame that the minority of idiots spoil what is after all a good and valuable resource/help etc web site

PS I reported that person to that site for spamming with a strongly worded email, hope they closed his account but alas I some how doubt it

I agree that there's loads of spam, but having said that, one of the reasons I joined the site was that it was so easy to use, most people seemed friendly enough and it was easy to share tips for bargains. I don 't think I would have bothered if there was spam police as I would have been a bit too worried in case I was spam!!

Things like this have been discussed many times on here- in the correct place- the discussion forum.
Thing is Spammers are ALWAYS going to exist and they will find ways of getting round what ever is put in front of them

But you also need to appreciate that the Mods do not get paid for the work they do, therefore if they had to look at each newbie it could potentially become a lot of work. The other part to that is there are genuine newbies, what if they want to post an excellent grabbit- but it has to be checked first and the mods are available 24/7- the website could miss out on a good offer
• Second what Butlers just said... there is a recent thread (of many) here:

Current process is the only way, without a big investment in the software behind the site, or a large number of staff.

There is the option of moderating new users, which is a compromise between moderating all new posts (by new users) and what is currently in place, but even that is a major and time consuming task.

The other alternative is to ban use of webmail addresses for new users - something that can make a huge difference in the spammers signing up (many will be using hotmail type accounts), but again it's time consuming to set the list of banned domains up, and maintain it - not to mention the inconvenience to users who are legitimate but don't have an isp/work email address.

Both are options with the default VBB install but are inconvenient to do.

They're not spiderbots are they? I don't really know much about them but they used to be on another site I used - new users would appear and make new threads spamming !!!!!! but apparently, they were all completely automated spiderbots which could be avoidable if something was programmed in to the site software.

Sorry if that doesn't make much sense and it may be complete hogwash but I thought it was worth mentioning just in case it helps. :o:D

Edit:

Just did some research and apparently they do exist and they're known as Forum Spambots! :D

MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Hi, Martin’s asked me to post this in these circumstances: I’ve asked Board Guides to move threads if they’ll receive a better response elsewhere(please see this rule) so this post/thread has been moved to another board, where it should get more replies. If you have any questions about this policy please email abuse@moneysavingexpert.com.

That's probably why they didn't do anything to get rid of them! :rotfl:
