  • My winning nomination is EPILEPSY ACTION!
    Official name: British Epilepsy Association

    www.epilepsy.org.uk

Provides awareness, resources and support in relation to epilepsy!

And why should they receive the money?

They train volunteers to provide face-to-face support for people with epilepsy as well as informing organisations and their staff on the condition.

Relentlessly they also provide support to people online, on the phone or by text message when no one else is there. Epilepsy Action takes a holistic approach on epilepsy and its effects advising the patients and their relations with a wide range of issues covering all the ages, men and women, travel, work, medication, depression etc. Additionally, they keep up to date with the research around the world and provide the information to the professionals who find this utterly valuable and time-saving.

And since brain is the most valuable organ, the charity pours part of the funds they raise into research on the subject. We should study the organ so much more. Epilepsy as a condition is merely one of many counting on the research.

Most importantly, Epilepsy Action acts as the voice of the people with epilepsy, since without the charity government, NHS would not listen. Now they have a chance and things do move on, be it slowly.

    3. National charity supporting stroke survivors of working age
Different Strokes is currently a MoneySavingExpert.com charity and we are extremely grateful for the financial support we have received as a result. I am nominating Different Strokes again as our work continues - in the last 12 months another 35,000 people of working age i.e. those under 65, will have suffered a stroke, and about 500 of those will be children. Although stroke is seen as an affliction of old age it frequently strikes people in the prime of life, often for no reason. Stroke is especially devastating for younger people - one moment they are fit and well, the next disabled - often with a young family to care for and support and relying on employment for income rather than a pension. Younger stroke survivors must come to terms with physical and emotional changes as well as significant lifestyle adjustments - mobility, job, income, dependence, relationships - everything changes.

    c) Helps children & adults affected, and Educates professionals in prevention techniques

    d) approx 1 in 1000 births result in this injury which can be preventable. Suffers can be left with a major disability affecting balance co ordination and restricting movement or even a paralysed arm. The group aims to put families in touch with each other by holding family fun days and its important that the children and the parents know that they are not alone. They have a comprehensive list of factsheets including how to claim dla. Newsletters are sent to all members regularly.

Although a charity, the Erbs Palsy Group offer support whether you join the group or pay your subs or not, as they feel its more important to offer support to a distressed parent at a time when you are bewildered, distressed and fearful of the future.

Obviously prevention is the key and the group raise awareness by having professional members and holding information days for health professionals so they are not just dealing with the effect, they are tackling the cause and taking positive steps to prevent this injury and devasting another family.

The group when I first joined after the birth of my daughter where a very small group who are now growing with only there own fundraising, they are a great help and support to children & adults affect and their families and carers.

  • Bethesda Care Home and Hospice
    Stornoway, Isle of Lewis Scotland

    http://www.bethesdahospice.co.uk/

A hospice and care home for the Hebrides

My husband and I moved to the Isle of Harris at the end of January. My husband had been diagnosed with a brain tumour in November just after deciding to take early retirement at age 54.
In April he went into the hospice to monitor his medication; we all expected him to be home within 2 weeks, instead he died within 2 1/2 weeks.
The care he received at the hospice was excellent, everyone very caring and understanding.
Since a law was introduced stipulating that all patients have to have their own room Bethesda is building a new wing but is struggling to raise the funds.
Bethesda provides hope and care for anyone requiring it. Without it the Isles would have no community support for their elderly and terminally ill.

    c. Holidays for young people with life threatening illnesses.
    d. Offers holidays to young people dealing with life threatening/terminal illnesses. Holidays abroad can be a very daunting experience for people dealing with illnesses like cancer, not to mention the added expense of things like adequate insurance! The chance of a holiday and to feel completley safe with health and support staff around during the holiday is more than words can describe for young cancer patients like myself.

Please support them by thanking me for this post!
  • A) The Cystic Fibrosis Trust
    b) cftrust.org.uk
c)The reason why i am nominating this charity is that my 8 year old son Sam suffers from this disease, sufferers of cystic fibrosis have a sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and airways which has to be treated by physio therapy (a series of bangs and slaps to the back and chest) two or three times a day.the disease also affects the digestive system whereby no fats or nutrients can be taken from their food without 20 or 30 enzyme capsules a day.
1 in 25 of people are carriers of the faulty cf gene
50% of the people with cf are under 15 and 70% are under 20
the life expectancy of a cf sufferer is under 30 years of age
every week 5 babies are born with cf and 3 people are tragically lost
the money raised is put to finding a cure, which seems so tantalizingly close.
    thank you for your time
