Without the RNLI we would have a lot more deaths/major incidents at sea that we cannot cope with and the fact that the government do not contribute to their funding whatsoever proves what a sham this country is.

The nail is hit right on the head here. Being an Island, having sea rescue is essential, so why is it that our rescue services are entirely based upon donations?

Poor government, deffinately worth supporting ..

( I was determinded not to post unless I had a new suggestion, but I couldnt help here)

    Dear all

    https://www.odanadi-uk.org

This charity can only be described as incredible! I have recently been involved in setting it up.

    (8 word description)
Odanadi UK seeks to prevent human trafficking.

It supports its Indian counterpart who rescue those who have been forced into prostitution. There are always heartbreaking tales of the incredible cruelty inflicted on the innocents, normally supported, followed-up by
corruption at all levels. Then there are just as many inspirational heartwarming stories, like one recently where 8 young girls were kidnapped and taken to a brothel in Bombay. Odanadi rescued them and got them home before they even spent a night there. This is one of the reasons why Odanadi is so important , these girls didnt have to experience the terrors that so many others do.

Like the 15 year old girl who thought she was going to work in a garment factory in Bangalore, when she arrived at the address, it turned out to be a brothel. After years of forced prostitution, and contracting HIV, she was rescued by Odanadi India. She has now trained to be a beautician and lives in a village closeby.

Odanadi UK has regular and close contact with Odanadi India. Every penny raised we can guarantee will go directly to Odanadi India.
  • Hi, I wish to nominate Headway Ayrshire. Part of a UK-wide brain injuries charity. Website is www.headway-ayrshire.org.uk

Headway Ayrshire provides a lifeline to those who have suffered traumatic brain injuries (adults and children) and their carers. Traumatic brain injuries can occur from strokes, brain tumours, car accidents, falls, assaults etc I am a carer to my husband who has suffered a brain injury. Brain injuries can affect anyone and can completely destroy lives without help. Without Headway I think my marriage would be no more - I love my husband to bits and always have but the pressure from all of the changes from the brain injury was destroying both of us. Headway Ayrshire have just lost a lot of funding yet the demands on the services are increasing.

If Headway Ayrshire is not supported I would like a vote to be given to the Firefightercharity previously nominated - hubby was a firefighter. Don't know if I can do this but worth a try!

    Emmaus UK
    https://www.emmaus.org.uk

    The homeless charity that works.

The 14 UK Emmaus Communities enable people to move on from homelessness, providing work and a home in a supportive, family environment. Companions, as residents are known, work full time collecting, renovating and reselling donated furniture. This work supports the Community financially and enables residents to develop skills and rebuild their self-respect.

Companions receive accommodation, food, clothing and a small weekly allowance, but for many, the greatest benefit is a fresh start. To join a Community, they sign off unemployment benefits and agree to participate in the life and work of the Community and abide by its rules, for example not bringing drugs or alcohol into the Community.

Emmaus is a secular movement, spanning more than 40 countries, with 14 Communities in the UK. Each Community aims to become self-supporting, with any surplus donated to others in need.

I know that cancer is a terrible disease, but please remember that the biggest funded charities in this country by personal donations are cancer, childrens and pets charities because they tug on the heart strings and everyone donates. Therefore, other equally needy charities get forgotten about. 1 in 10 people in this country suffer from asthma and currently 500000 people are not being effectively treated for their disease and there is very little funding out there to find better treatments (at the moment we are having to treat the symptoms not the disease as we do not have enough money to research it properly.

I would also like to say that as a non religious person I find charities like Cafod to be a bit too preachy and morally wrong in that they offer help to people but also feel the need to try to convert them to christianity. I think it would be better to support a charity without a hidden agenda.

My recommended charity is AAIR (asthma, allergy and inflammation research)
    http://www.aaircharity.org/
Summary: Asthma can take your breath away...

This is a small charity based in Southampton that helps to fund one of the best asthma and allergy research centres based at Southampton University. This charity has been crucial in aiding asthma research at Southampton and has helped provide much needed equipment to help drive the research forward. There is not a cure for asthma and people are still trying to determine what causes it, which costs a lot of money in research and is far too slow because it is under funded and there are not enough researchers. With more money in the field not only could more equipment be purchased, but also more money could be provided to draw more students into the area to undertake PhDs (students undertaking cancer related PhDs can be paid up to £18,000 per year tax free, most in asthma get at most £12,600 so you can understand why people gravitate towards cancer research), providing the basis for future generations of research scientists.

Please help asthmatics all over the country who are struggling to breathe because we cannot treat them.
  • Action for M.E.

    www.afme.org.uk
working to improve lives of people with ME

As someone with the M.E. diagnosis, they saved my life. afme provided me with invaluable resources ( financial, spiritual, emotional, and mental) support and information which gave me strength when my body had none.

Fundamentally they campaign for more research, better services and treatments.

They are invalauble to my life and am now working, resting and playing.

Part of the Furniture Combo Breaker
Charity I would like to nominate would be the Noah's Ark appeal.

This is an appeal to raise funds to build the one and only childrens hospital in Wales, which will be in cardiff.

They have already raised 6.8 million but so much more is needed.

We have no childrens hospital in Wales, so families have to travel such long distances to specialist childrens hospitals in England.

    Heres a linky

  • I wish to nominate Alopecia UK

    Link www.alopeciaonline.org.uk/

This charity offers much needed help and support

I think this Charity should be supported as it gives vital support to alopecia sufferers, my young son has alopecia areata and this was been the only place where I felt love and support. When visiting this website you realise how many people have this condition and how everyone supports eachother. This is a worthwhile charity and needs to be brought to people's attention all the hard work people put in. They do so much already with little funds they have so please support it. :rotfl:
  • a. The Multiple Sclerosis Resource Centre (MSRC)

    b. http://www.msrc.co.uk/

    c. Proactive charity supporting anyone affected by Multiple Sclerosis

    d. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a degenerative condition of the nervous system affecting around 1/600 people in the UK. The MSRC provides practical support/advice to people affected by this disease. They offer a range of support from providing dietary or lifestyle advise to sufferers, funding / advice to individuals who may need equipment or adaptations (to vehicles) to cope with disability, a 24-hour freephone counselling line, AND (here is my link to your first criteria!)... advice on financial matters / rights for individuals with / affected by MS, including support through financial appeals processes.
Their website is extremely informative providing a synopsis of the condition, links to research articles and access for users to share their experiences.
This charity is highly rated by my mother who has had this condition for over fifteen years, hence my nomination - if it can help her and others with the condition then it gets my vote.
    • British Retinitis Pigmentosa Society
    • http://www.brps.org.uk/
    • Fighting Blindness to find treatments for Retinitis Pigmentosa
    • Retinitis Pigmentosa is the biggest cause of BLINDNESS in working age adults in the UK! The British Retinitis Pigmentosa Society (BRPS) was founded in 1975 and is a registered charity set up for the benefit of those with Retinitis Pigmentosa. It is a self help group which seeks to help its members live with and overcome their visual impairment problems and to bring relief by stimulating research into the causes and eventually the treatment of Retinitis Pigmentosa. This is achieved by funding a range of research projects using money raised, mainly through its volunteers for this purpose. The recent news on the Gene Therapy trials and Bionic Eye are all related to Retinitis Pigmentosa and the BRPS. My close friend has Retinitis Pigmentosa and I REALLY want a treatment to be found to help him!
