  • The Jennifer Trust for Spinal Muscular Atropy
    http://www.jtsma.org.uk/
Support for sufferers of SMA and research
This is a small charity which is doing excellent work in researching the causes of Spinal Muscular Atrophy (not to be confused with Spinal Muscular Dystrophy) - they have already made advances into the genetic links and hopefully they can find a cure in the future. The support they offer to sufferers and their families is tremendous and extremely important.
  • A)The Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Charitable Fund

    B)http://www.rbht.nhs.uk/about/fundraising

C)Supports heart and lung disease research and treatment

    D) The Royal Brompton & Harefield Charitable Fund is a registered charity dedicated to supporting the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals by awarding grants for medical research, specialist equipment and amenities to improve patient care. Whilst NHS funds ensure that their hospitals provide an excellent service, there is always a need for additional income to purchase state-of-the-art equipment and facilities, as well as an innovative research programme to provide new treatments for heart and lung disease. The Royal Brompton & Harefield NHS Trust is the largest postgraduate specialist heart and lung centre in the UK, with an international reputation. The Royal Brompton saved my life just over a year ago and has helped many people with severe respiratory problems. My family and I will be forever grateful for the time and dedication that they gave to me and we would love to be able to give something back.

  • I would like to nominate the following charity please:

Norfolk Deaf Association reg charity no. 210060

    www.norfolkdeaf.org.uk

Supporting isolated Deaf and hard of hearing people

Norfolk Deaf Association is a small charity supporting over 7,500 deaf people in Norfolk. Hearing loss affects 1 in 7 people, but we struggle to obtain funding because deafness is not easy to see and often gets overlooked. We offer opportunities for Deaf people to access new skills, training and support via a range of community based activities. Deaf people, on average leave school with a reading age of less than a 9 year old and use British Sign Language as their first language so accessing written information is extremely difficult. We run all sorts of brilliant and fun projects to raise awareness of deafness and try to bring deaf and hearing communities together. We help people access the information they need to manage their deafness and live their lives as independently as possible. Thank you.
  • Hi

I would like to nominate 'Second Skin' a local charity raising money for local children with Cerebral Palsy who are supported by Blackpool, Fyle and Wyre Cerebal Palsy Association Charity Number 222464.

It was first started in April 2000 by Catriona Duncan after seeing first hand the benefits of Second Skin Lycra Splints.

The NHS does not provide these splints which cost from £500 to £2000. They are now a small group who raise funds voluntary by holding raffles, tombolas sponsored swims and many more events.

As each splint is individually designed they can not be re used and with a childs rate of growth they only last approx one year.

'Second Skin' have funded by son for his splints which have helped him tremendously as he has cerebral palsy.

For more information regarding the splints please visit http://www.secondskin.com.au/ .

    Many Thanks Claire:j

    a. Micro loan foundation
    b. www.microloanfoundation.org.uk
    c. They provide loans and training for women in africa who have lost their husbands and are unable to work

    d.
We provide small loans (otherwise known as microloans), basic business training and continuing guidance to groups of women in sub-Saharan Africa. This enables them to develop self-sustainable livelihoods, feed, clothe and educate their families, and work their way out of the poverty trap. We now have nine offices in Malawi and have made microloans to over 10,000 women. We have just established an office in Zambia, and are beginning to examine possibilities in Namibia. These people need to be able to provide for themselves and their families - not with hand-outs, but with a steady income from a self-sustainable business.

  • a. The Together Trust
    b. https://www.togethertrust.org.uk
    c. Providing care, education and support since 1870.
    d. Previously known as the Boys and Girls Welfare Society, the Together Trust has been providing care, education, support and improved life opportunities for young people throughout the North West since it was established in 1870. Today we help more than 1400 children, young people and young adults each year, who are experiencing emotional, behavioural and social difficulties, physical disabilities, learning disabilities and Autism Spectrum Conditions. In order to continue this crucial work we need to raise vital funds. All voluntary income is used for the direct and additional benefit of the children, young people and adults that the Trust serves, so you can be sure that if you choose to support the Together Trust, you really will make a positive difference.
  • A: National Association of Clubs for Young People (registered charity 306065)
B: Check out the very moving video on their homepage - http://www.clubsforyoungpeople.org.uk/
C: Safe, Supportive Community Clubs for disadvantaged children/teenagers
D:Child Poverty is jeopardising the future of 1 in 4 young people in the UK. Young people from low-income families are more likely to live in homes where there is domestic violence or drug/alcohol abuse, and 1,000,000 live in overcrowded housing where up to six children may have to share a bedroom. With little space to do homework or even just relax at home, many choose to spend long periods outside, (even if their local streets are unsafe), making them vulnerable to:
    • Becoming a victim of crime or violence
    • Involvement in gangs/criminal activity
    • Educational underachievement, leading to life-long economic disadvantage
All young people need somewhere safe to study, socialise and be physically active in order to reach their academic potential, gain economic security and stay physically and mentally healthy. Please vote for Clubs for Young People, who provide such places for 400,000 disadvantaged children every year.
  • I would like to nominate Rowcroft Hospice in Torquay

    www.rowcrofthospice.org.uk

Rowcroft Hospice is more than a place to support cancer patients. It offers a lifeline to those that need help and assistance. It's staff are kind, thoughtful and always willing to challenge convention, never stopping to accept the innevitable always fighting for more ideas, better care and a greater quality of life for everyone that enters through it's doors. They support so much more than cancer, from illnesses that have remained undiagnosed for years for example lymphodaema and even more recently idio-cyclical oedaema,to those that need physiotherapy, exercise and encouragement to lead their normal everyday life as well as enjoying the quality of life that many people take for granted. Rowcroft stays ahead of patient care and support through the donations of people that care. Every penny is used to support the people that it supports and every penny is greatfully received not only by the hospice but by those wo use it. Your support will be greatfully received and make a difference to the quality of life to those that use Rowcroft as either an out or in-patient.

Thanks for nominating Freecycle. It's such a simple but effective way to help keep things out of landfills and a great way to pass along useable items.

    c. Local community groups saving money and the environment

    d. The charity has been formed to offer structured support for Freecycle groups all round the UK. Brilliant work is being done by volunteers up and down the country running internet based groups for their communities to facilitate reuse and recycling to cut the amount of stuff going to landfill. The aim of the charity is to provide services and support, including a more user-friendly website, to ensure:

    • provision of more groups
    • continuity of services
    • effective assistance network for group moderators and members.
Freecycle provides a great service to a membership of over a million in the UK - saving money, building local communities, cutting down on landfill. Support from MSE in recommending the service has been much appreciated. It would be wonderful if volunteers and members could also benefit from a funded central infrastructure. Thanks for reading!
