  • a. Sundowns

    b. http://www.sundowns.org.uk

    c. To support people and families with Downs Syndrome

    d. As parents first and members of Sundowns second we strongly believe in taking a positive attitude towards our childrens future. The last 15 to 20 years have seen great changes in peoples attitudes towards the education of children with Downs syndrome and the acceptance of young adults in the work place. We feel that we owe it to the parents who were fundamental in making those changes happen, not to settle for what has already been achieved but to continue to push the boundaries further. We also feel that we have a responsibility to help the older generation of adults who have not been given the same opportunities afforded to our children and the generations to come. Most importantly we believe that no one should have to cope with the practicalities and emotions of raising a child who has Downs syndrome on their own

  • SKRUM
    SKRUM Posts: 1 Newbie
My wife is a regular user of this site, and told me about this. I'd like to nominate SKRUM to receive some money from this fund.

    a) SKRUM
    b) www.skrum.org
    c) Pushing for a Better Future
    d) SKRUM is based in Swaziland, the country with the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS infection in the world (42%). Average life expectancy is just 39 years and dropping. The population is 958,000. By 2010, 120,000 children are likely to be orphaned by HIV/AIDS (67,000 already are). There is no national HIV/AIDS education. SKRUM was recently established to give youngsters in Swaziland a chance. By engaging them through rugby, trust can be gained and children can be educated in safe sex, bringing them together in a sport they wouldn't otherwise have the opportunity to play. SKRUM aims to develop the whole person through leadership, lifeskills and community service. If supported, the successful SKRUM model could be used in other under-developed areas of the world.

SKRUM is the brainchild of Michael Collinson, the President of Swaziland Rugby Union, a Yorkshireman now living in Swaziland, who wants to change the future for Swaziland.

As this is a new charity, not all of the information is on our website yet. But feel free to contact me (or Michael, through the website) and I can provide whatever information you need.

    Thank you

  • I would like to nominate:-
    a. Camsley Grange Riding for the Disabled Group.
    b. www.camsleygrangerda.org.uk (out of date - currently being changed )
    c. Horse riding as therapy/leisure for disabled people
    d. Camsley Grange RDA group is a small charity based in Warrington, Cheshire. They provide the opportunity for people with a wide range of physical and mental disabilities to enjoy horse riding in a safe and fun environment. Riding delivers a real and lasting therapy that not only benefits mobility and co-ordination but encourages confidence and self-worth whilst having fun.The group is completely run by volunteers and relies on fundraising to support the riding activities and pay for the upkeep of the ponies. In recent months the group have had to move to a new riding venue and are desperately in need of funding to provide a weatherproof riding area.
  • Meningitis Research Foundation
    http://www.meningitis.org/

Aim: We fund research to prevent meningitis and septicaemia

Know someone who died age 7 from Meningitis suddenly overnight, so personal. They also don't seem to advertise on google (spending donated money) or advertise via other means, which is all taken from donaters money. Something which I hate with charities.

A well deserved charity cause, my daughter almost died when she was 14 of this terrible disease that was first misdiagnosed by family doctor and only picked up by the hospital. More reasearch needs to be done on all strains of this killer disease (PS daughter now mother of a 3 year old and thankfully fit and healthy).
  • Hi,

    Can I nominate St.John Ambulance!

We provide first aid cover at over 300,000 events each year. Without us giving our time freely many events wouldn't take place as the insurance companies will not allow an event to take place. In addition, behind the scenes, we also teach First Aid to both adult and children.

Even if we don't get nominated for some money, can anyone who reads this say "hello" the next time they see a member of St.John Ambulance (or the Red Cross) out on duty. That way we know we are appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Paul
  • I would like to nominate

    Re-Connect

    www.reconnectwakefield.org.uk

Supporting older people in Wakefield, West Yorkshire

This charity supports the elderly and disabled by way of befriending, coffee and luncheon clubs, DIY and small household tasks, transport to get them out and about on shopping and leisure trips. They get no statutory funding and rely solely on grants etc.
A brilliant charity to eleviate social isolation of older people which in turn improves their health and well being.
If anyone would like help or volunteer see the web site for details. Thanks
  • a) TEENAGE CANCER TRUST

    b) https://www.teenagecancertrust.org

    c) Provides treatment units specifically for teenage cancer patients.

    d) My son developed leukaemia at the age of 15, relapsed at 18 and had a bone marrow transplant at 19. He was treated at first on a childrens ward then on adult wards. It could get lonely without peer group support. Teenage years are difficult enough without teenagers having to face their own mortality, altered image such as hair loss, and unpleasant treatment at a stage in their life when they should be spreading their wings, living it up and planning for the future. Companionship of other teenagers during such difficult times helps to keep the spirits up and even aids recovery.
The Teenage Cancer Trust builds and equips units specifically for teenagers so that they have people from their own age group around them.
There are a number of units around the country already, but not in the South, so I am hoping we can raise enough funds to build one in the South of England.
