• Washington Mind

Mental ill health and emotional distress support service.

Washington Mind is an independent voluntary organisation supporting those suffering from mental ill health and emotional distress by working in partnership with them in creative and innovative ways. Services are provided by a small team of professionals including counsellors, psychotherapists, hypnotherapists and complemtary therapists. We also have independent mental health advocates and group facilitators all working under the recovery model. Washington Mind works closely with the local community raising mental health awareness in schools, colleges and among employers. The independent advocacy service supports people in having their voices heard especially in relation to housing and finances. We have just celebrated national mind week and the theme this year covered debt and poverty. Washington Mind worked in partnership with welfare rights and the social fund to provide information and solutions to debt problems for service users. The link between financial concerns and mental health is one that we fully recognise and is becomming even more of a concern given the current financial situation.

Since formation LATCH have provided funding for parents' accommodation, equipment, social workers, and many other facilities and events that help make a difference to those going through a very difficult time.
• Transplants In Mind

Helping more people live better for longer

Raising awareness and carrying out research in to organ and tissue donation for transplantation. We run National Transplant Week - this year 6th-13th July 2008, Donor Days and the Donor Bus. Any one in the UK could need an organ transplant, due to illness, and accident or genetics. Over 8,000 in the UK need an organ transplant to save their life. Many currently cannot carry out a normal life as the are too ill to carry out normal activities that most of us take for granted. This affects both them and their family and friends. Every year 400 people die whilst waiting for a transplant, 100 of whom are children. Transplants in Mind encourage people to talk about their wishes on donation, and encourage sign up to the organ donor register, to increase the potential supply of donors. Help us to increase the numbers and success of transplants carried out each year, so helping more people to live better for longer. You don't need to be a hero to save lives!

a. Rehab UK.
b. www.rehabuk.org
c. enhances economic/social independence of people with disabilities.
d. Rehab UK works hard to support and enhance the economic and social independence of people with disabilities on a broad range of projects. My personal interest is at the London Brain Injury Vocational Training Centre; where I am a member of a committed staff team who enable and facilitate adults with acquired brain injuries towards challenging and rewarding paid employment, voluntary work and education/training.Before joining the team here,as a full time paid employee, I had suffered a brain injury and was unwaged and claiming state benefits. I have personal experience of the economic difficulties and social exclusion that acquired and traumatic brain injury can lead to. We are regular visitors to the moneysaving expert website as a source of tips. Brain injury and its resulting disabilities can lead to a dramatic and sudden change in circumstance for people and we would appreciate any support in our work.

• a. North Clwyd Animal Rescue
b. www.ncar.org.uk
c. Providing safe homes for adandoned pets
d. NCAR is funded only from kind donations from the public. They take in and rehome over 1000 dogs, cats & rabbits every year. They are currently raising funds to replace a "stray" block which burnt down a year ago. They work with volunteers and local schools to help inform people about the best ways to look after pets. They are well known around North Wales as being a kind and dedicated sanctuary towards animals and receive a large number of kind visitors each year to help walk dogs. NCAR are looking at building an Education Centre to work more with local schools. This would allow more pupls to visit the santuary and staff would be able to educate more people about animal care from a young aid, helping reduce the number of abandoned animals
• 1) The charity I would like to nominate is the Motor Neurons Disease Assocation

2) The link to their website is http://www.mndassociation.org/

3) The support of people with MND and those who care for them.

4) MND is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that attacks the upper and lower motor neurones. This leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. Most people die of pneumonia as their lungs fill with fluid and they no longer have the strength or ability to clear their lungs. Until my father was struck by the disease - the only thing I knew about MND was that Stephen Hawking had it. After my father was diagnosed, I discovered it is a devastating, debilitating disease. Luckily my father kept his sense of humour and twinkle in his eye until he died – convinced he would live long enough until a cure was found. The MND Association not only is trying to raise funds to find a cure, but is raising awareness of the disease and helps individuals and their families deal with its devastating affects.
• North Kirklees mind & Counselling service.

www.northkirkleesmind.co.uk

Mental health support.

Mind offers support and counselling to any one who feels they need it. The doors are open to all but the main area of work is supporting those with mental health issues and to help them stay out of hospital and to cope with life on their own.

I help out at MIND and sadly this year we had our funding pulled. It was a terrible blow to all especially those who relie on the service.

We are managing to keep going, just, how ever everything is being done on a boot string.

Mind is a life line for some and has helped keep many people well and in their own homes:j

There are always lots of smiles at our drop-in centre and always someone to talk to when things get too much.

d. What a unique charity. :T They have helped so many people through the pain of making a difficult decision in crisis and in supporting them afterwards through their free drop-in sessions offering pregnancy testing, confidential counselling, signposting and support. ON TOP OF THIS, they work with other charities and health professionals in getting informaiton out to teenagers on how to prevent teenage pregnancy and diseases. The full day programme in school workshops covers: 'Relationships' 'Self Esteem' 'Sexually Transmitted Infections' 'Contraception' 'Drugs & Alcohol' 'Healthy and Active Living' and 'Money Matters'. Hear what some of them had to say: "was fun and got the message through" "not to rush into stuff I am not ready for" "I learned not to let people pressure you into having sex" "Always to use a condom if you have sex" "It has taught me stuff that shocked me because I never knew" "It helped me live my life better" "i learnt not to put myself down so much" "You can really see what drugs and alcohol can do" :A
