This site has lots of bargains. Also, it's worth going to a show when they're on. I know they'll be a London one in the new year, but they have them all over the country. If you let me know roughly where you live, I can find out more details for you.
Thank you so much for this - one of the shops is not too far from me so I think I'll have to pay a visit;)
I can't post pictures but have just finished this as a present for my in-laws (they bought me the kit last christmas)

and have just started this for my parents ruby wedding

and bought this for me as an easy to do treat

I'm new to all this and never had a go before but want to start in the new year.
When you buy a little kit, is the design already printed on the fabric or do you have to work it out yourself ?
I bought a small kit from the charity shop this morning and there's no imprint on the fabric, just a picture (which is why I bought it) so haven't the foggiest idea where I'd start
Part of the picture I can get out and almost see through the fabric........would that be how I work it out. Hate to appear a bit of a dumboMary

Hi again! Looks like we have a lot in common...glasses, hampers, cross stitch...lol!
I know it must seem daunting looking at a blank piece of fabric, but the kit you have bought sounds like counted cross stitch, which means you follow the chart in the kit.
If you go to http://www.cross-stitching.com/kh_started.asp they have a useful guide on how to get started on there.
One tip from me-make sure the fabric is the right way round! I once started stitching a kit with the fabric horizontal instead of portrait-if that makes sense! I still have it because I couldn't finish it like this-it wouldn't have fitted on the fabric this way round. Can't face unpicking it all.
You might find buying a cross stitch magazine (or look for them in charity shops) helpful. Often they have free kits on the front, which are small and easy to use as a first attempt.
Must go-I haven't finished stitching my mum's christmas card yet. And after that I have a small Lizzie Kate design to stitch for my Grandma's xmas pressies. 3 more days of stitching left!!!! On Wednesday the whole day is devoted to sorting out & wrapping all the presents at my Grandma's. She's in hospital at the moment, but I quite enjoy wrapping anyway. Hopefully she's coming out on Monday.Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27

ruth - thanks. I get the feeling this little kit I've got was a freebie with a magazine. Not sure I'll manage it............its about the size of four postage stamps.....................lol (well thereabouts)............and there's no chart included, just thread, needle, picture and fabric.........oh eck...........if there's a pig in a poke to be got I'll have it.............still, was only 20p.............lol
I'll keep my eyes open for a magazine or two
Best wished for your granMary

Mary,
When you work from a chart, you mark the centre of the chart and then 'mark' the centre of your aida, and work outwards.
I have used a pre-printed aida in the past, but sometimes the printing shows though, so I don't really like them.
Good luck with your first project, you will soon be hookedYou're only young once, but you can be immature forever0 -

Well 20p is a bargain, but you'll find it hard to stitch without a chart. What kit is it? I have subscribed to 3 of the cross stitch magazines for quite a while now, so I may well have the magazine that contains the chart you need.
Thanks for the wishes for my Grandma. She just wants to put her feet up for a while and get out of the christmas prep.;)Cross Stitch Cafe Monthly Challenge Member #27
