For those of you who hate french knots I found this site a few months ago when learning how to do them myself...
    http://www.needlenthread.com/2006/11/french-knot-video-tutorial.html

I now find them sooooo easy to do!! On the kit I was doing at the time I went a bit overboard with the knots once I had got the hang of it :D

Hi everyone, just read through this thread and couldn't see the answer to this...but if i've missed it somewhere then sorry.
My mum used to do cross stitching and she has quite a lot finished but never got around to framing them. So I decided to have a go at framing one for her for xmas. I've found a nice one but it was on white fabric so it's a bit grubby from being handled....does anyone have any suggestions for how to clean it? Would just try random things myself but I would hate to ruin it as it's quite a big one and took her so long to do!
Thanks in advance for any help :D

Water not too hot. Put a bit of baby shampoo in the water-not too much or you'll be rinsing for ages. Don't rub the stitching at all. Just swoosh it around in the water gently, then rinse through several time with fresh clean water until there's no soap coming out. Dry flat on a clean white towel. If it needs ironing, do this with a clean white towel underneath and iron on the reverse, so you don't sqush the stitches.
If she has used hand dyed thread or fabric, then you shouldn't wash these as they aren't colourfast. All Anchor & DMC threads are colourfast until about 90 degrees, I believe.

    Thanks for all your help.

rainmac - I'll keep an eye open for a few magazines in the charity shops

ruth - the one I've got says All Our Yesterdays and I think its from The World of Cross Stitching - just noticed it says 'Chart on page 10'
oops - my letter o has just come off keyboard !!! What do I do ?? can I stick it back on or is that dangerous ????

Probably have the chart somewhere. Haven't got time to look for it before xmas as I'm off to my family tomorrow & have loads to get done today, but if you describe it-boy, girl, seaside, xmas etc etc, or even better take a photo, I'll do my best to dig out the right chart when I get home again.
    Happy Christmas to you all!

You're welcome! I've had loads of bargains from there in the past.:D

Ooohhh, I'd like to have a go at stitching onto other fabrics (t-shirts etc), is it easy to do?

Rainmac, using waste canvas is really easy. I have used it before on tea towels and a kitchen apron. I had a Bugs Bunny picture and it says 'what's cooking Doc?'
When you've finished all the stitching, just wet the waste canvas (a spray bottle is best for this) and pull out the waste threads with tweezers.
