HSBC are one of the strictest lenders on the market today (Next to CitiBank)
I'm a staff member with no previous problems with credit, and I got declined.
So... Yeah =D
I got a Vanquis Visa myself. Sure, the interest rate is extortionate, but use it like a charge card, pay it off in full every month and you'll be laughing.
Also, in comparison to HSBC, Vanquis are a UK based call centre. If you Call HSBC Card Services you get transferred through to Manilla, Bangalore, Hydrabad or Kuala Lumper - not a UK Call Centre.
Even with a HSBC Plus account, one of the perks are '24 Hour UK Based Call Centres', but that is purely for TeleBanking. Credit Card Services? No no to UK.
Hope this helps0 -
how strict are they for opening current accounts?
Depends on the account.
Virtually everyone who applies will get the Basic Bank Account (ATM card with £200 limit, no chip and pin) - they even offer this to Bankrupts, so in that aspect, they are relatively lenient.
But stemming onto Current Account, pretty strict. But it's not a case of 'apply for it and if you get declined, then oh crap' sort of thing. Say which account you want, and they will run a credit check (there is no way round this at all) and the credit check will tell you what sort of account you can have.
For example, if you apply for a normal bank account, but the decision comes back saying no, you'll always have the basic bank account to fall back on.
Bottom Line - Try applying for any one you want really (They'll hammer home the HSBC Plus at £12.95 a month), but whichever one you go for, if it gets accepted, then YAY! If not, you'll have the Basic Bank Account to fall back on.
Plus, if you get the Basic Bank Account, keep it running for 3-6 months and then they'll look at upgrading you.
So all is never lost

Hi Everyone,
I have a Captial one card with a £500 limit and a Vanquis with a £250 limit both which are paid in full each month, I also have a t-mobile contract which I have had since May, so quite a few green ticks, but I have 4 defaults from 2004/2006 and one of which is for a Abbey Visa Card (Which was run by MBNA), this was passed to a debt collector and the debt is now being repaid monthly, now can I apply for the basic MBNA card or the Virgin one, or will they refuse me becuase of the 4 defaults and because one was with them ?.
Thanks.0 -

not that i'm aware of, no. but considering everything that is going on with the banks, it wouldn't surprise me if they brought it in sometime in the future.
My best bet? Basic Bank Account and Vanquis Card. But that's meHi Everyone,

I wouldn't risk it. Defaults are on your file for 6 years. And the fact that one was passed to debt collection may make it even worse. So I'd leave it to run and try an application when the Defaults are removed.0 -
Crikey Guys, the thread was half way down the second page
Dannydebt - welcomeAre all of the defaults sttled? If so that puts you in a better position. You have one outstanding that you're paying via a DCA. Unfortunately the account will not show as settled until it's paid in full. Personally I wouldn't risk the MBNA card, as cahnces are they would say no. You're building some good credit with your Vanquis, Cap 1 & phone. Do you have a full current account that reports to all 3 CRAs? Have you got a catalogue account - Littlewoods, Next JD Williams etc. These are pretty easy to get and will give you nice green ticks
- Good luck and keep us updated!
DMA - interesting stuff!! Always nice to have an "insiders" point of view. Often we're second guessing what the lenders are thinking lol
Doeslani - I guess you should just sit tight and wait. Looks like that as long as you are who they say you are then you've been accepted
Dexters mum - that's a long time. He should definitely give them a call to find out. Has he got a reference number from the online confirmation page or email?
Darcy - no chance with HSBC lol. They're not my faves
...phew. Just waiting for my Dominos man. No Tesco man tonight. Hope everyone is having a good evening :j
