Where did my post go?

Must be because of the merge..

ChrissyG - you could make veggie burgers as they contain lots of lovely fibre and goodness? What about trying a kidney bean burger, I just found this recipe on BBC Food website:

I break my bread into small chunks and whizz a few at a time individually, tip them out and then do the next few.

    Tip:-
Make as many as you like - you can keep them in a bag or container in the freezer and then just scoop out portions as needed.

Note:- For those people who don't like the last slice from breadmaker bread with the hole in it - breadcrumbs are an ideal way to use it up. As are croutons, bread pudding, bread sauce... you get the idea :)

As for the burgers - it's usually recommended that you add an egg to the mix to help bind it all together. You won't be able to taste it :)

I also ring the changes by adding finely chopped mushroom and onion (both raw) to the mix and (to my mind) this helps make very tasty burgers. Honest :)

And finally - you don't actually need breadcrumbs - but they make great padding to help stretch your meat and make your burgers more economical. As long as you don't go too heavy on them nobody will realise that they're there :)

If you want to add a bit of a zing to the taste, things you could try adding are mustard and/or worcestershire sauce and/or horseradish sauce.
Also crushed garlic clove, if you like.
Just play about with the ingredients and amounts, you'll eventually find a taste to suit you :)

My budget recipe that came with my burger maker has some oats in it as a filler. I don't have it here as I'm away from home at the moment, pm me to remind me to post when I get back.

We have several different sorts of burgers, plain beef, have done spicy lamb and latest is spicy pork, as I read here that it's leaner and cheaper than lamb. I looked at the w/e in Morrisons and sure enough, pork was £1.20 and lamb was £1.90. I usually put in egg, but I mixed a few bread crumbs in as per recipe and found it bound together OK without the egg. As the ones I have are free range I left it out!

I always wonder if I have got the salt and other seasonings right....this time I got out the little frying pan and cooked a little bit of the mix to see what it was like.

As for the cost, I got 2 packs of mince (total 1kg ) and got 15 burgers in the region of 85-100g each. few old breadcrumbs, some spices and a small chopped onion. so approx £2.50 for 15, approx 17p each.

As you don't have a food processer (like me) dry some bread out on a very low heat int he oven (while you're cooking another meal is MSE!), then put it in a bag and roll over with a rolling pin until breadcrumb like!
  • last time i made breadcrumbs i let a half loaf go hard (ok not actually on purpose), used the insides for bread sauce and grated the crusts, worked fine.
Trying to be good, not always succeeding. :A:beer:
  • Hi there,

    Recipie as follows:

    500g of mince
    1 medium egg (beaten)

    optional:

    2 heaped tbsp of breadcrumbs
    1 small onion
    2 tbsp of fresh parlsey
garlic poder/chilli powder/worcester sauce etc - anything you fancy really!

pop all ingredients in a bowl and squish about :D

grab a small handful and roll into a ball then flatten - wax circles are really handy to stop them sticking together. They freeze really well so I tend to make a huge batch then freeze in portions.

OH loves them (with onion and parlsey)

    I add...

    a squeeze of ketchup
    a splash of worcestershire sauce
    a handful of oats/breadcrumbs
    a beef oxo cube
    1 egg
    S&P

It looks gross but tastes fab !!!

Sometimes I add some cooled fried onions but only if I have lots of time on my hands, which is never these days !!!
