will have to seed some this weekend...

me peas are doing wonders, the extra ones i planted in the gaps (where the original ones didnt come up) have sprouted....

got some space between the broad beans (again where they havent come up), so i might stick a couple in this weekend....

Can anybody advise me how to tell when my broad beans are ready for picking? I'm assuming if you're growing in a garden or an allotment, you would just try a pod when you thought they looked big enough, and if the beans inside were too small, you'd leave it a while and try again.

However, as I only have a few plants in my balcony a-pot-ment, I don't want to "waste" any, if I can avoid it.

    Any tips?

    Mortgage-free Glee!
The main way is if the pods open easily.

Hi all! Have been lurking on the green fingered for a while : )! !
I've always wanted my own veggie patch, so when we moved into this house last year, we set about the bottom of the garden so we could make room for one. Our Landlord was very nice and fenced the bottom of the garden for us and put a gate in too!

I started off with one of those mini plastic greenhouses for starting the seedlings off, did really well with that. When the sales hit the shops I'm going to try and get one of the bigger walk in type ones, so I can start growing even more for next year ;)

We dug up our first batch of home grown spuds yesterday and had them for our tea with some lamb chops, cauli, spring greens and mint sauce and they were delicious - even more so though I think because of the satisfaction of knowing "we did this"..... if that makes sense ??

Anyway I've taken some pictures of our veggie patch as it currently stands and just wanted to share them with you all. I love all the advice and hints and tips on this board, and will hopefully be posting a lot more in the near future :).

I have this 'stuff' growing in my back yard and even IN the shed!!! Everytime I dig it up, more grows back. I've tried using weed killer and didn't work and got no more idea's on how to get rid of it

That yellow patch looks like dry rot to me. I don't think the white wriggly stuff is, though, but I am not a fungus expert! Bleach sometimes works on fungi, or Jeyes fluid, but I suspect not on dry rot.
