lookin good! will be interested to know how you get on with pots in the orange buckets - have a few of them I could use next year for that!0

Don't misunderstand me - I'm not criticising, I'm asking - but surely an ordinary 2 gallon bucket is too shallow for spuds isn't it? I thought you needed a dustbin or half dustbin for that!0

Thanks! I am having a lot of fun and most of what I've done I've just guessed. I've also got a lot of advice from everyone on here - thanks to you all.
Once you get going you'll ove it. I'm already thinking about what I'm going to do next year :rotfl:0 -

They should be fine, it's the first time i have used them but the idea was from everyone on this forum whom are always full of good advice so i went along with that. I got some pots and grow bags from an offer with the Mirror paper (i think) and 2 of the grow bags were far smaller than the buckets.0 -
gingerbeer - gosh, you're picking your gooseberries already? Mine are swelling nicely after recent rains but still need some sunshine to sweeten them up. (I always seem to need tons of sugar when cooking them, however long I leave them on the plants in the sunshine.. My least favourite job - they're so prickly!). I'm also growing just one potato each in one or two big plastic pots I had in store, as I had a few seed potatoes left over I didn't want to waste, as well as using the Grow Sacks, so can't wait to see if they produce anything.0

If they are builders buckets they should be 15 litres, just over 3 gallons?
Been using black builders buckets for several years for growing early potatoes and been getting decent results so would expect gingerbeer to do ok with them- not massive yields but ok.0 -

I have attached photo's of what i have done so far:

This is my front garden with 3 gooseberries and a jostaberry against the green fence (in the hope of covering it up) and there is also a dwarf apple tree in the centre.

These are my 2 raised beds one with root veg and one with brassicas in and some Thai Dragon chillis and peppers on the table.

Here i have another gooseberry on the left, a few strawberries, A kiwi in the middle which is lovely and furry and peas growing up the wall.
I also have a small walk in plastic greenhouse with toms, cucumbers, courgettes, pumpkins melons, beans growing in. I have strawberries in troughs along the wall between the neighbours and also have tons of runner beans growing. I have tried many different things this year, some experimental but loving it all. I have even managed to fit in a cherry tree and a dwarf terrace peach tree (i'll have to wait until next year to see what comes of that) I dabbled last year but was a little late for any decent produce. fingers crossed this year. :T
Wow I'm really impressed, you've made the most of every inch of space. I'm dabbling this year but hoping to do more next year and I'm very inspired by what you've achieved.0 -

Been studying your photos - and saw those large green plastic "trays" in the second photo - hmmm....I've never seen anything like them...
I've got shallow trays that I bought to accompany my Patiogro Greenhouse - and very useful they are too - but I've not seen those sort of trays anywhere and I'm inclined to think at a glance that they might be pretty useful.
Wondering where you got them and how much they were purlease?0 -

I think I bought the trays from B&Q two yrs ago but can't remember just how much they were. Yes they are very handy to keep all my little 'uns together especially when carrying inside and out to harden them off.
Primrose - No i haven't picked any gooseberries yet but was only giving them a little squeeze earlier on wondering if they go soft or give any other indication of being ready. The ones in the front garden are in their 1st year so there's not overly a large amount (hinomaki & Invicta) except for the one hiding behind the broom bush which is full (Pax). Of my 4 bushes only one of them is really prickly too, which is good.
How do you know when they are ready? by taste, size or softness? Or in the case of Pax when they turn red? I've no idea what to do with them once i've picked them but i'm sure i'll find something.0 -
Here are a couple of snaps of my work in progress allotment. It's not a full sized plot... only a 3/5th, but plenty big enough for me. I got it at the end of March so have had to put quite a lot of time in to get it cleared, dug over and planted up for this year's growing season... I have a greenhouse at home which I started seedlings off in as soon as I found out I'd got a plot, so most things have been sown/planted on time.
I inherited rhubarb, gooseberries and raspberries from the previous plot holder (bonus!). My crops are
Potatoes 3 varieties
Cauli
Kale
Cabbage
PSB
Calabrese
Onions
Shallots
Carrots
Parsnips
Scozonera
Beetroot
Radish
Beans - Broad, Runner, Soya, Borlotti
Peas - Mange Tout, Sugar Snap, Asparagus
Strawberries
Spinach
Celtuce
Chard
Leeks
Globe Artichokes
Sweetcorn
Squash
Various salad leaves, herbs and flowers.
Some of my beans and peas don't seem to be doing that well, but everything else is coming along nicely
It's good to see what everyone else is doing... good thread.TOP MONEYSAVING TIP
Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!0
