  • thanks primrose.
I got into it in march with some indoor sowings but then lost the excitement and haven't done much since.
Looks like I need to do some work if I want to put some food on the table this summer!

Robnye - runner beans germinate better if soaked for 8 hours in water before planting. It's not too late to sow again if you planted yours in the soil as they may have been eaten by slugs.

i tried the water thing as well, with no luck, i then tried straight into pots, no luck, so i last did straight into the ground...... with no apparent luck

ill give them til the weekend and then try the soak in water

I've successfully grown some sugar snap peas and am wondering if its time to put them out yet. They're about 3 inches tall.I bought some pea netting and was going to put them in a long pot with the pea netting behind the pot attatched to canes. Also,do i put slug pellets down and do i need to put any other type of netting over them.

Yes they should be fine, if the overnight forecast is frost - just throw an old net curtain or fleece cover over them.

Well done to the pepper growers - mine are really slow starters, I am on the verge of putting them in the coldframe outside as things seem to be really growing out there!
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

None of my beans have germinated. I've put in tons of them and nothing happened. So I bought some plants from B&Q. I may lose these to the wind yet.
It seems that in our area nobody has been able to grow beans or butternut squash from seed.

Quick question, DH has moved all of our seedlings out to the shed. He is watering them every day and I think he's over watering them. I keep telling him to water them less but he won't listen and says he knows what he's doing. So far 3 of my melon plants have died and I don't know if it's because they've been drowned.
    Any hints?

  • ooh Suziemum - I'm very jealous of your peppers! My plants are growing but no sign of flowers yet.

My butternut squash all except one germinated - in a non heated greenhouse. They're too small to go out yet i think, still only two leaves but there are signs of more coming.

Today I'm going to plant out my courgettes, summer and onion squash. :D

i check my seedlings everyday..... but only water them when the trays are dry, also check the soil in the pots, stick in your finger, if the mud sticks, then dont water...

i also tend to water from the bottom, ie into the tray rather than over the top of the seedling/pot

i also only water the plants in the garden if we have had no heavy/medium rainfall every couple of days.... ie not a 5 minute shower....

    Chain up the watering can?:rotfl:

If you stick your finger in and if it feels the wetter side of damp rather than the drier side, then don't water. You can learn to lift up the pot and see how heavy it is to see if it needs watering. You need to learn the different weights of compost you use though,
Feel the leaves, if they feel limp and lackluster, water. If they feel full of water and firmer, leave.

    It's a learning curve.
Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.

some plants are obvious they need watering cos the wilt over.... then spring back to life once you have watered them

Kaz - yes, it's quite possible your seedlings are being overwatered. When this happens they "dampen off" and rot (as I've found to my cost). An wise old gardened suggested to me that instead of watering them, you mist the leaves and compost daily. This way you add a little moisture but never enough to over-soak the compost and cause rotting. I've tried this with runner beans and climbing French Beans in pots and have had a better germination rate at my second sowing (first batch mostly rotted before they sprouted because of overwatering!)

    Hi,
I have always wanted to try my hand at growing veggies - So my husband has tranformed the bottom of our garden into my veggie patch.
The garden was all lawn inc the weeds now the bottom half has been fenced off (with mesh sides from a cat run that he previously built for our 2 kitties looks pretty good infact.) and is home to -
A 6ft x 4 ft raised bed - home to runners carrot raddish beetroot spring onions courgette and squash.
All covered with a mesh frame top ( previously a side of the cat run ) to keep the cats + animals off
A 3ft x 2 ft raised bed - home to my lettuces - lollo rosso + rocket + cut and come again.
    Again covered.
The rasied beds were made from a home made wooden picnic table.
A grow bag containing 3 shop brought tomato plants.

Having problems with slugs at the moment. Any ideas????
We have a nighlty visitor Mr Hedge so I dont really want to put down slug pellets .....
Trying copper tape around my runners - still seem to eat them though.

Peeping through are raddish + beetroot + runners with 2 sets of leaves + lettuce.
No show of others yet ???/
    :p
