I'd have thought it is cheaper to get a couple of cheap white shirts than have her wear her own tee-shirts. Either way, what she wears will get worn out and need replacing - uniform or 'home wear'!

Tbh, I think it is reasonable to buy a new shirt at this stage - it's not like it's only a couple of weeks is it?

This seems to be more about you making a point than school uniform.

I agree,a couple of shirts will not be too expensive and it is 12 weeks or so, until end of term, so it is not an unreasonable request by the school. If you cant get to the shops tonight, write a letter and explain, they shouls allow you some leeway, but surely you expected this reaction. It is possible, as someone said, that you have signed a homeschool agreement stating you will follow the uniform requests.

actually its NOT compulsuary ,at the comp it is but not the junior school its a recommendation, she is still in grey trousers and school fleece lots of the kids wear some parts of it but not all.

if it's not compulsory then remind them of that in the letter :D

  • what age is year 6? (I went to school in NI, we had primary & secondary, I don't understand the "year" system) I am guessing about 10/11?

at that age I would have been mortified if mum had made me go to school in ordinary clothes when everyone else was in uniform, things may be different now, but I remember just wanting to "fit in" at school.

Maybe your wee girl is only saying the teacher told her off so you don't make her stand out again tomorrow? I could be wrong - it's a while since I was a kid.

learn from your mistakes though, next year buy a size or two too big (the words "you'll grow into them" were just a tradition of school uniform shopping in our family :D)

I agree with wishiwasarichgirl, maybe your DD just wants to fit in, I know my DD wouldn't want to be too different, shes also in Y6, kids can be cruel for the pettiest things like not wearing the right uniform.

We are not talking much money for a shirt or two from the supermarket. I wish all lifes problems could be solved quite as easy and cheaply.

  • I can't believe all the responses suggesting you buy new shirts. I say stand your ground as long as your dd is ok with this.

My daughter is in the same position in that her whole uniform is starting to wear and getting too small but i will not be buying anything new now as it is a whole new uniform for high school. My daughter is fine with this and will make do with using plain t shirts and black jogging bottoms etc.

Not only that but how can the school dictate that you must buy new uniform, they have no idea of your financial situation.

The most frustrating thing is that there are kids who never wear uniform and this is allowed to slide, it is the kids who normally wear full uniform who are picked on if they decide to wear the wrong t shirt etc.

I think the point is that this is no big deal since you can now get shirts so cheaply. No need to spend loads.

Of course if the OP's daughter will only wear the highest quality branded shirts, then that's a different matter and she's got a problem. (Or maybe more than one, lol. ;) )

For goodness sakes what a storm in a teacup.

New T-shirts from supermarkets cost like £2-£4. Its hardly going to break the bank and your child can wear them once they've finished for stuff like painting etc.

Just go and buy them! I remember years ago my neighbour was moaning that the T-shirts with the school logo was an extra pound and how bad that was since they were on the dole and can't afford that. Yet funny enough they always had enough cash for a takeout pizza at the weekend, bingo, fags and a couple of trips to the pub a week.

Uniform is there so the kids all look the same so there is no pressure over some kids wearing designer gear and others not. If some parents see fit to ignore them then why bother??? Also this is a matter of parents showing their children that rules should be stuck to. You can't pick which school rules you want to apply and which you don't want to just because it doesn't suit.

Anyone who can't afford £2 to provide clothing for their child is clearly either not claiming the benefits they are certainly entitled to, or they are spending the money elsewhere.
I suggest it is that latter.

To be honest for the sake of my dd not getting singled out by the teacher, and for £2, I'd buy the bloomin shirts

You have to pick your battles and this isn't one I'd pick.
