If anyone has found trousers that boys don't go thru the knee on, please let me know. He can either wear grey, black or navy.
You can buy iron on mending fabric on the haberdashery stand in most supermarkets. I normally iron a patch on each knee when the trousers are new and it gives extra protection against the knees going.
I'd love to know what boys do at school. We've had countless bits of clothing with tears and stains on, and every time I polish their shoes, they come home the next day looking like they are ready for the bin :rolleyes:Here I go again on my own....0 -

They fall over a lot whilst kicking a ball around. Also destroys shoes.
They find tiny bits of thread in their trousers/jumper and are not satisfied until they have pulled it into a hole, which they can then work into a bigger hole.
At lunch only some of their food goes in the correct place - the rest gets mashed into their shirt.
Of course they aren't aware of this.0 -
When I was at secondary school there was a dress for summer uniform, but I was busty and the zip wasn't holding up to the strain, so I had the summer dress on and a cardigan so it couldn't be seen that the zip was completely broken.
Damn that was hot. If you've any sewing skills, could you open up the seams down both sides and add in a strip of material? (I know I couldn't but some people are OK with the sewing malarky)0 -
Going back to the original topic briefly (sorry all above!
)...
I agree with the child benefit thing somebody said a while back but thought I'd elaborate and say that it's not just to help with things like this, it's for things like this - i.e. shirts and food etc should be top of the priorities list for the money. I don't have kids but what's the benefit per week now - £15-18 per week? Enough for a shirt, and it's one's duty as a parent to spend this money correctly!
Also, I feel the OP just has an axe to grind with the teacher/school. My mum would have been horrified if I'd have gone into school shoe-horned into a shirt or wearing something I 'preferred' rather than should have been wearing....
It makes me sympathise with teachers these days - they have no control over the kids and they now apparently don't even get backed up by the parents! I'm only 24 and my parents' relationships with my teachers were totally supportive and the reason I went to school in the first place was to LEARN, not to let my mum get angry at the rules!0 -
I have to say that it sounds like there are other issues between the school and yourself (you said you'd had other run-ins), so I think we're probably not judging this one based on the full facts. You have said that you can afford the shirts, so I don't see the issue. You seem to just be saying that you could buy them if you wanted to, but won't - why?
I think it's important to present a united front with the school rather than undermine them, in the same way that parents should present a united front. Children should learn by example that (within reason) rules should be followed.Feb £10 a day challenge: £357.67/£290
Now aiming for £5000 -
Its uniform, it obviously is compulsory or none of the kids would wear it, buy 2 shirts from asda cheaply.
completely agree
now that supermarkets have become involved with selling low cost school uniforms shirts, pants, skirts and balzers etc
it really doesnt cost much for you to simply get a new one.0 -

except when state schools get above themselves and tie you into one supplier. I can only buy DD school trousers, polo shirt, sweatshirt and PE kit from the school shop as they have to have the official school logo on them.
I hate the rule and I have written to express my dissatisfaction with it but it was introduced before DD attended the school and they are not going back on the decision. I did know about the rule but it's my catchment area school and in this LEA all children go to their catchment area school as they discourage preferred placements and they are usually turned down. My choice was pay the inflated prices of "unique" uniform or go through the stress, hassle and extra travel costs of trying to get DD into another school.
IMO tieing parents into a specific supplier should not be allowed. I am all for uniform but just the basics of colours and school tie.

Just wondering if you smoke or drink? perhaps you could sacrifice one of these to buy your kid a new school shirt in primark for a couple of quid. In my school where the uniform was compulsory, the kids (with incorrect uniforms) were always collected by their parents with a cigarette hanging out of their mouths. They had the most Christmas decorations outside and the biggest tvs inside, but their kids never had their books in time for new term, delayed money for trips and their uniform was never right. Sometimes parents need to put first things first.Penny xxx
