Petrichor - I pay 50 elec and 28 gas each month over the year for 4 adults.
missyg - great minds think alike:D : I was about to suggest the same to 10past6, so 10past6 - as missy says, don't overwhelm yourself -start with one meal idea and see this as a slow conversion. What I do now that I have learn quite a few recipes, is plan a 2 week evening meal menu plan and just repeat that every 2 weeks, so once the thinking and planning has been done, it doesn't have to be done everyday, and you get to make sure you have a variety of dishes. At least half of those meal I cook double portions and freeze 1 for a home made ready meal for those days when in a hurry/tired/uninterested in cooking. But this is something you can think of in the long term. I notice you had salmon in your trolley - well done, very healthy and tasty. a simple meal for that:

1 pan for cooking pasta 10-12 mins in boiling water
1 small saucepan for cooking mushrooms -5 mins
grill for salmon, (5 mins)or microwave if no grill
70-100g pasta (like raph. I buy a huge bag for £1 from sainsburys).
salmon fillet: lighly grilled, doesn't take very long to cook.
    Add:
    chopped 2 tomatoes
lge dollop of 0 fat framage frais (get from any supermarket)
corriander & basil (I buy frozen cubes of the stuff(look in freezer section of supermarket) so I always have some - it is quite expensive to buy fresh herbs, but herbs to add wonderful healthy flavour to food)
14g half fat mature cheddar grated (and in general, grated cheese goes much further than slices)
chopped mushrooms in garlic (in saucepan with 5g butter & 1 crushed clove of garlic). I use the butter as a treat, but you can try 'frylight' spray, which I use a lot with cooking - barely any cals but prevents food from sticking to pan, where you would traditionally use oil or butter to cook in.
    I'm sorry I can't price this up.
The fromage frais can be used with chopped fresh fruit ofr a pudding, or on cereal too.
I do find weighing scales a kitchen essential to help learn portion control - do you have some? A kitchen timer is good too to help with timing if you are cooking several things at once.
Beanie - thanks for sharing a bit about CP -I would never have known about the tiredness that brings without you tellling us
Petrichor - I shall certainly be wearing cute pink matching undies:D
wendy - I'm a lousy sleeper too, though not as bad s you but it is terribly boring being awake half the night, as well as draining the next day.
I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once
  • Thankyou everyone for giving me such a nice welcome :A. I will explain a little more about my situation (hope you don't mind - it might help me get things off my chest a little!). I managed to loose 3 stone a few years ago by doing my own variation on the low carb thing. Then I became pregnant with my son. Complications during pregnancy left me virtually unable to walk (the bones in my pelvis had moved apart too much and any sort of movement was incredibly painful. I had crutches for about 3 months before the birth and had to move downstairs for several weeks as I could not even lift my foot onto a stair. Consequently my exercise levels went from moderate to virtually zero. I put on about 4 1/2 stone during pregnancy  . Over the next year, I managed to get rid of 2 1/2 stone (I was breastfeeding so didn't feel comfortable with the low carb thing so I was pleased with this slow weight loss especially as I had not been able to exercise). I got to the position when my son was about 1 where I was able to start cycling again (walking was still a problem). I did about 5 miles each morning. I also started seeing a new Physio who gave me several exercises focussing on my lower back (which is abnormally curved). I tried really hard with these, but I found they caused be lower back pain (that I'd never really had before). This kept me awake at night, often despite pain killers (wheras the pain from the pelvis was mostly movement related it didn't affect me so much at night). I kept them up for several months, but the cycling had to mostly stop as I was finding it too difficult to get up after only a couple of hours sleep many nights in a row and pelvis pain was too great later in the day. Physio also kept nagging about weight which I can understand as extra weight can never be a good thing with joint problems, but I found it really upsetting as I was enduring a lot pain - much of which seemed related to the exercises that I was determined to keep going with, other exercise had gone out of the window, and my half a pound a week weight loss was obviously not enough. It was especially hard to take when I had gone in chuffed to bits that I had finally got down to 13 1/2 stone (2lbs lighter than I am now), and once again came out feeling that trying my best was simply nowhere near good enough. I got home angry and upset (perhaps unreasonably so - Physio was only doing her job after all), gave up on my 1/2lb a week challenge and put on almost a stone. About six weeks ago, my son stopped breastfeeding (I was rather attached to this as when I could barely move, it seemed to be one of the few things I could do for him). As soon as he stopped, my pelvis pain dramatically reduced, I was able to resume cycling and I can now walk a reasonable distance in comfort. I decided to give Phisio a rest for a while so that I can sleep at night, and concentrate on weight loss. I know I will have to go back to the back exercises at some point, I just feel I need a break from enduring pain and having little sleep.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone here had much success with conventional diets combined with zero exercise? Also is anyone else fed up with the assumption that most medical professionals have that you have health problems because you are overweight rather than vice versa? Although I accept that extra weight is not good for joints, I have lately had a significant (almost back to normal) improvement with a weight gain of almost a stone. Previous improvements have also occured without the help of significant weight loss. I agree that loosing weight is a good idea when obese (like me), I'm just not sure that it deserves the emphasis that medical professionals give it in certain situations.

Lemondrop - thanks for telling your story - you are right it does help get a better picture of what is going on for you and what might help. But first of all - lots of sympathy and hugs -you have had/are having a rough time. Several of us on here have sleep problems and know how bleugh that leaves you. Others on here experience a lot of pain so will totally empathise with you there. In answer to your question above - I get virtually no regular exercise due to health problems and was on drugs that had a side effect of increasing my appetite so I put on a lot of weight. To my astonishment, the slimming world eating plan over came that appetite and I ate plenty and lost the weight with no change in exercise levels. It worked for me but not everyone takes to it: it seems to be a question of finding what works for you as an individual- I can only tell you of my experience. There are plenty of peeps on here with health probs that restrict exercise, and I'm sure they will be along in the next day or 2 to tell you there experience but they definitely have sucess with all sorts of differnt methods. And all will vouch for the invaluable support to keep at it, that come here when you fall off the wagon and be helped straight back on it - that is what maks the difference in the end. Stick with us - we have a great support network here.

    Hello Lemon Drop

Oh dear, zero exercise, yep that's me :o. I have no excuse except having a full time job, a family and an evening book selling business.

Well, at least I confirm that you can lose the weight without the exercise. I do go for a 'gentle stroll' at lunchtime for about 20 minutes (I'm not even talking a brisk walk here :o )

I actually ventured out on my bike today to go to the shops, but this is not the norm - however, as I enjoyed it so much I might continue going for rides.

When I was dieting I followed the Rosemary Conley GI Diet, and lost between 1 - 2lb per week.

I didn't feel hungry on this diet as it comprises breakfast, morning snack, lunch, afternoon snack, tea, evening treat. There are lots of recipes that the whole family can eat, so you don't even look as if you are on a diet.

Now that I am maintaining, I follow most of the low fat cooking principles but don't restrict food types etc. and the weight is staying off.

As for physiotherapy - I cannot comment because I have never been. But I have and do go to an osteopath for lower back pain (caused during childbirth - bloomin' kids eh? :rotfl: ). This has always been very successful for me and may be might be worth you considering - perhaps you could ask your doctor? I was referred by my doctor last year and it was covered by my medical insurance so it is a recognised practice these days. Previously I had just 'referred' myself and paid for the treatment, I have been going on and off for 13 years, with long breaks in between, only starting treatment again when something causes the problem to flare up - eg long hours driving for work etc.

Good luck, you can do it.

Back from a fab skate - I could have stayed out all day, in fact I'm itching to get back out already, but son was tired, he's still working on learning the turns and stuff so it's a bit harder for him :) I don't think it was much of a workout for me but it will do for today along with a bit of wii fit later ;) (trying to get all my yoga poses up to 100 points, I take it 100 is the top score?).

Lemon Drop - ouchhhh! Poor you :( Thank you for your story, I don't have any words of wisdom I'm afraid but it's always great to get a bit of background about the people on here and see where you're coming from. I hope you enjoy our thread. There are some definitely some people here having great weight loss success with little/no exercise so hopefully you can swap tips! Good luck.

Well a little more weight seems to have gone on here :o Something strange is happening because I've been eating below my BMR and exercising daily... I can only imagine that because I was over my cals Monday & Tuesday then pulled it back sharply the last 3 days that I've gone into good old 'fat store' mode  (The only other thing I can think of is it's around the time of ovulation?)

Today and tomorrow I'm eating 1200 exactly and keeping to regular mealtimes, see if that helps. Although weigh in is Monday I have until Wednesday to make my "one year" target.

I managed to lose a stone by just changing what I ate. I switched to salads & fresh fish. And plently of fruit (I still had the odd treat). The only exercise I did was walking the dog.
When the weight loss started slowing down & plateau-ing I decided it was time to up the exercise to take it up a notch.

My problem wasn't that I hated healthy food, I was just lazy & found it easier to bung some oven chips & frozen pizza in the oven & slouch infront of the TV til it was done.
Now I find I love cooking from scratch, and I'm enjoying the salads just as much.

Hiya FFM, I've had a couple of gains since I got back from my skiing trip and so I've been trying to get back down to my lowest weight in time for the one year anniversary of starting to lose weight :) It means a lot to me to be able to say I've lost the weight and kept it off (rather than gained a bit back IYSWIM).

Although gains/losses are normal with me, I feel like the underlying "trend" has been slightly too high lately so I want to knock it on the head before it goes up even more... and with a birthday coming up, that's likely ;) So I need the buffer!

How are you doing this week, is everything OK?

    Hello everyone.

Thanks for the welcome to those I may have missed previously.

The help and advice you've all given to me over the last couple of days has really given me the encouragement to start home cooking, in a funny kind of way, I'm looking forward to it compared to previously when the thought petrified me.

My apologies to those who've given me specific advice, I'm losing track of the members name, although I have copied and pasted you comments in a new folder.

Missy, regards starting from basic, I noticed the following recipe on the SW recipe thread, it looks simple enough to do, so I'm going to give it a try:

    Baked bean loaf

    Serves 4
SW plan: 2 syns per serving on green plan

    400g can baked beans
    1 small onion, finely chopped
    57g wholemeal bread (6 syns or 1xHEB)
2 tbsp tomato ketchup (2 sins)
    1 egg, beaten
    1 tsp yeast extract (Marmite)
    1 tsp dried mixed herbs
    Seasoning

Make the bread into breadcrumbs. Then wet a 1lb loaf tin, and line with non-stick baking parchment. Mix together all the ingredients and turn into the prepared tin. Level the surface and bake in a preheated oven at 180*c for about 35 minutes until firm to the touch. Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes, then turn out, remove the paper and serve warm or cold

I also noticed this, which I'm going to try, again, it looks simple enough:

    Carrot Cake
    Ingredients:
    4 Scan Bran (crushed)
    5oz carrot (grated)
    1 tsp cinnamon
    1 tbsp runny honey
    3 eggs (beaten)
    1 weetabix (crushed)
    ½ tsp mixed spice
    1 tsp nutmeg
    2 tbsp mincemeat

    Method:
    1. Preheat oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.
    2. Place all the ingredients into a large bowl and mix well.
    3. Turn the mixture into a lined tin, cover with foil and cook for 30 minutes. Remove foil and cook for a further 30 minutes.
    4. Turn out onto a wire rack to cool.

Can someone please give me some advice on what kitchen utensils / appliances I may need, also, what about general ingredients?

Thanks to each and everyone, I mean this in all honesty, without your support I'd never had taken this step.
