It is a FERGUSON FDT 500

the cheapest way to get digital tv (for free!!) ..if you already have a sky digibox n dish and have had yr contract for 12months+ just cancel your membership! you get to keep you digibox which still receives a digital signal so you get a great digital picture and the freeview channels.. thats what ive done. for some strange reason i dont get ITV2 but get all the others including the brand new ITV3 for absolutely no monthly or one off fee!! :D

ITV2 is part of the Sky Family Pack but may go onto the free one when sky's contract with ITV comes up for renewal at the end of the year. ITV3 was launched in a rush on satellite (they bought out a company, closed one of their channels and launched ITV3 in it's place in less than 24 hours) so they haven't encrypted it.

Channel 4 and 5 (and currently ITV1 but not ITV3) are not available when you take your card out. All BBC and S4C channels are. (BBC is FTA or FreeToAir whilst C4 etc. are FTV or FreeToView which is a totally different thing to FreeView)

What you are describing is Free Digital Satellite (DVB-S) as opposed to Free Digital Terrestrial.

The channel lists are different on both. For the full list of Freeview&TUTV (DVB-T) channels http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/terrestrial/epg/ and for FreeToAir digital satellite (DVB-S) http://www.lyngsat.com/28east.html. If you are cancelling a Sky subcription or are taking up Sky's new Freesat package and have a blue house card (not the Sky blue card) you can also get the FreeToView satellite channels ITV1, C4 and five.

    HUMAX PVR 8000T

FREEVIEW (NO SLOT) PLUS HARDDRIVE RECORDER.

Had one for a while now at approx £120 not cheap by any means but being able to get rid of all those video casettes was well worth it.
Records just like sky+ you can pause live tv and return to it when the tea has brewed!

    FAB :D

Just bought the Echostar T-101 from Argos. My postcode RG128 is supposedly not in the freeview area but it seems to work fine with existing external antenna. Not sure how many channels I am supposed to get but there seem to be lots, mostly crap unfortunately there are like three shopping channels and what seems like dozens of teenie pop video ones. One or two channels suffer from sound/picture corruption here and there but overall it's not bad for 45 quid.

Kids are nagging me however as it does not get CBBC, can see myself up on the roof shortly with wideband antenna instead to get better signal.

  • Don't quite understand our local Curry's. ???

They have stacks & stacks of Digital Receivers in the local store including the Ferguson FDT500 @ £34.99 ............... but when I check to see if I can receive Freeview in my area (same area as Curry's), it's shown as being not currently available!!!!!

Having seen how the numbers were selling in my 10 minutes in Curry's, they are going to have a lot of disappointed and irate customers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;)
It has taken about 4,500,000,000 (4.5 billion) years for the Earth to form as it is now .........
and it'll only take about another 100 years for mankind to really **** it up!!!!
  • I have always preferred JVC audio/visual equipment. I searched for a JVC set top box and found the TUDB1. This box does not seem to be offered for sale on many sites and I cannot find any reviews.

Does anyone have any experience with this box - I am particularly interested how it compares to the Sony VTXD800.

If you want to check coverage in your area and have been told by https://www.freeview.co.uk that you can't recieve it also try http://www.dtg.org.uk/retailer/coverage.html as this tells you if you can only recieve some channels and if so what they are.

Echostar T101; bought at Argos for £44.99.It appears to work perfectly even though I live in an area listed as needing a special aerial (YO18 8NN).

Would it be helpful to others to compile a list of areas in which Freeview says reception is not available AND where 'moneysavers' find otherwise?!
