    Hi

This is my first post, as have just joined today.

There was an article about cable users cancelling their subscription service and still getting the digital terrestial signals for free.

I have cable with ntl, but if they take back the box is it a case of just buying the cable and sticking it in the back of the tv and using the tv remote control to get the pictures?

This seems an excellent option as I rarely use the services, plus with a freeview cheap box can then video whilst watching digital tv.

I very much look forward to any thoughts and help with this. Thanks

    All the best

    Paul

  • I've got the goodmans one it was at the time the best at the price £48 from Argos. But then it ddin't work- I didn't have the correct aerial so that cost me £100 >:(

It;s not as easy as they say on the box!!
  • Hi All

I found a brand new Sony Freeview box at a Cataloque Discount Centre in Derby ( They are an arm of the Littlewoods/Grattons etc group I understand ).

Went in saw the Sony marked at £120 retail. I asked the chap behind the counter if he had cheaper ones and after I told him my budget was circa £40 he sold me the Sony for that price !.

"No Box ! " he warned " but a full Sony one year warranty "

Exit one happy MoneySaver clutching his Sony Freeview.

The chap told me all the stock was returns but fully warranted and he had the authority to haggle.

I think they have branches all over. I saw one at the Galleria discount Mall in Hatfield

    Happy hunting !!

    Martin :)
  • First thing to do is check if you can receive Freeview in your area on http://www.freeview.co.uk/ Next check if any of your neighbours are getting good reception on existing aerials - you may have to do a bit of mountaineering!
Wickes have a suitable high gain wideband aerial for about 28 quid.
I bought my mother a Thomson box for Christmas last year and installed a wideband aerial in the loft. Reception was OK some of the time but she got break-up on the picture quite often. I recently bought a Sony box and tried it at her house - reception perfect! I paid £95 for the Sony at John Lewis but have seen them elsewhere for seventy-odd. I do like to shop at John Lewis - they guarantee ALL TV's bought from them for 5 years, so forget extended warranties.
It's worth checking if the box you are buying has "loop-through" or "modulated RF" outputs if you want to feed a telly in the kitchen, bedroom etc. Nokia make one with a modulated output. I fitted one of the Daewoo boxes for an old lady in the village and it worked a treat on an indoor aerial.
The EPG's (Electronic Programme Guides) vary a lot. Some have TV and Radio Separate. Some boxes are not very granny friendly, so, if you plan to buy one for your mum, have a play with it in the shop and imagine how she might get on with it. If you buy blind on the Web you risk needing a City & Guilds course in order to learn how to work it.

I saw this thread and have applied it with great success it does not get you the freeview but crystal reception on all terrestial channels and some selected satelite channels such as:

    Sky News
    ITN News
    Discovery
    Sky One {at the moment but this will go and be replaced by another}

No great shakes but if your problem is poor reception this is ideal.

By the way all the connections needed are readily available @ B&Q

Woolworths are doing Echostar T101 for £44.99. Just got one and is very good and easy to set-up. Recommended.

Are you sure that woolies do this? I can't find it at their online store at least.

aiii! they have got loads on shelves around the entrance of the Chester store at least. It's the only place I've seen the T-101 PLUS available and the only reason I know it even exists ;D
