Yeah I can see what you mean Squeaky,

I always manage to think of dozens of good things to say or ask after the darn call. When my DLA examiner turned up I still wasn't ready. Two weeks after she came I realised that after seeing me "manage" the various tasks I hadn't remember to say a) "I do them because I have to do them - there's nobody else here to do them for me... and b) Everything I do hurts! Including doing nothing. So I grits me teef, rolls me sleeves up, and gets ON with it."

I can do on his behalf. It's an absolute minefiled to deal with, even for someone like me, so how the hell they expect seriously ill people to deal with them I don't know <sigh> :(
When I had my breakdown, if it hadn't been for good friends (and work) rallying round and sorting out all these things for me, I'd have finished up living in a cardboard box somewhere. It was about two years before I could pick up the weight and deal with these things myself. So actually - I still don't know how it's all done because I never saw any of it, or if I did it never registered.

  • I know exactly what you mean Squeaky. When I was at one of my worst points, my "then" CPN suggested I apply for DLA, which I did, but being so ill I obviously didn't know how to fill out the forms properly or what exactly they needed to know so my claim was turned down, and I wasn't in a fit state to appeal the decision. Pity my CPN hadn't volunteered to help me with it, but there you go. It wasn't until some 2 years later, having moved areas and got a new CPN, that it was suggested I apply again, even though I felt somewhat better, but I still had relapses and needed help going out and with care etc. Feeling somewhat more "compus mentus" I did as much research as I could, and talked to various people online about filling out these forms (I wasn't able to just go along to a CAB or welfare place) and they literally took me weeks to complete because it was such heavy going, but needless to say my hard work paid off and I was actually granted the award this time.

Sounds like you've had a rough time :(
One of my relatives was Agorophobic for years but was helped through by their CPN and now can travel down to see us by public transport(about 60 miles)
They still have problems with assertiveness and confidence and still claim DLA.
Don't think they could manage without.
I know what you mean about your younger son socialising and I think you are a very wise mum :)
  • Sorry, I'm a couple of posts behind at the moment, what with dealing with all my emotions etc ... :o

I can't even begin to put into words right now how I feel having had that call ... means the absolute world to me, and is also a sign that he's starting to get better :j :j :j :j

I'd never imagined such a positive response so quickly either so there's every hope that he can make a good recovery from all this :D

culpepper - I'm so glad your relative is able to get out and about again, that's something I can only dream about about at the moment, but I hope to turn it into reality in the not too distant future. I think I need to be more assertive with my CPN about what I actually need in terms of support rather than just let him sit there listening to me ramble once a fortnight and going away again with nothing practical really achieved. I've been so absorbed with my son's problems lately though that I've not given a thought to myself, and it's only now I'm beginning to realise that I need to be fit and well to be able to cope with all their problems
