Double Discount Car Insurance Loophole!

  • Thank you very much Martin - my car insured for a whole year for £96
    Here's how...

    I got a quote form the https://www.theaa.com £531
I took out insurance with Natiowide for £966

I waited until the next day and then went back to the aa website and changed the policy start date (so that the quote was dated after the start of the Nationwide policy).

    I Sent off Claim.
Claim was rejected - reason given was that the policies didn't match.
Rang customer services to find out what didn't match - was told I had to go to a Branch.
Went to Branch - told me they didn't deal with car insurance, they rang customer services for me - told me that I had to put request in writing to the address on the claim rejection letter.
My 14 day cancellation period only had 4 days left so I rang customer services - explained that I believed that the price promise was a 'scam' and that they should give me another 14 days to query the rejection reason. Eventually after speaking to many departments and various supervisors they agreed to give me another 10 days to query the decision.
Wrote a reasonably annoyed letter to request the rejection reason and also asked for a copy of the criteria used to make the decision. Also informed them that I would be making a subsequent claim with an alternative quote.
Five days after sending the letter, I received an answerphone message on my mobile informing me that my claim was incorrectly rejected and that they will be sending me out a cheque for £870 within the next few weeks !!!

Hi - Has anyone matched Privlege?
  • Has anyone had a successful claim with a direct line policy please? Thanks
  • Previously I wrote saying that I've had my claim rejected. I went into the Tunbridge Wells branch this morning who were very helpful and made a few calls for me. We decided that I would cancel the Nationwide policy as the Norwich Union quote couldn't be matched due to my additional driver having standard excess of £200 on the NW policy (NU do not apply standard excess to over 25s, Nationwide do). I received my claim rejection letter after 14days so I am going to write a letter disputing this to avoid the cancellation charge. I have to get a NU policy first then I have to phone up NW saying I want to cancel but ensuring that they note that I'm disputing the cancellation charge so the policy stays open. Then they can back date the cancellation when they get my letter.

But firstly I'm going to phone SIMONKIRLAND's contact on Monday morning to check why it was rejected.

I don't get what you are on about, here. You tried to exploit Nationwide's offer, but DID NOT meet the offer terms. So you want to cancel your policy - fine, but the cancellation fee applies. Don't see ANY grounds at all for you to not pay the cancellation fee. They don't have to reject your claim within 14 days - the Ts & Cs for the offer did NOT say that they would do so. Nationwide haven't done anything wrong.
  • I am considering this offer but from what I understand, I could be rejected if my wife is an additional driver?
I am currently with NU and they still are the cheapest. To match comparison, I select the closest match excess, european cover, courtesy car etc.
Can someone confirm that if I add my wife (over 25) I could have problems?
Also, something I haven't quite got my head around after reading this thread.
My renewal date is 21 Nov 05. If I take the NW insurance, do I need to get a new NU quote the day after renewal is due?
    Thanks

    Thanks

I'm not sure if this has been asked already - but can you take out a policy before the end of the offer date (31 October) with a commencement date later than this? My insurance expires on 17 Nov so I was hoping to get a quote from Nationwide and apply for it before end of Oct to start 17 Nov. Has anyone else done this successfully?

My next question is then does the 14 day cooling off period start from when I take out the policy - i.e 17 Nov?
Mines up on the 19th November.
NW quoted me £1033 and compared to Bell's £478 that'd be a MASSIVE cheque.

Just want to check - is it legal to run 2 policies on the same car?
    The 3 options are...
1)take out new policy to start this week and retain current Tesco policy
2)take out new policy to start this week and cancel Tesco policy - paying any penalties
3)book a start date of 19th November and claim the difference before the policy starts

    Any suggestions?

WIOth that potential refund just take it out now. I see no reason why you can't have two policies. May get complex if there is a claim against you though!
  • It's illegal to have two insurance policies on the same car. So don't even think about it!
