Double Discount Car Insurance Loophole!

  • Has anyone from N.Ireland taken out Nationwide insurance yet? Got quote from them for £750 - they have 3 main conditions for N.ireland, which were fine by me anyway. Then the excess is £250 (is that standard for Nationwide? Or is that another N.Ireland condition?)

My renewal (due on Tuesday next) is £440 which is from Abbey and is very very competitive - only got one lower quote, by £30, all others where £550 upwards! The excess on my renewal is £100 so that price could go lower if I ask them to put it at £250. Will need to check the european bit. My insurance does let me drive in Ireland but I don't know if it actually covers EU.

Still pondering whether to try the Nationwide. It would mean I'd end up paying about £130 for insurance instead of £440.

    Hmmm..

This all looks really good but I have one query. I'm currently with Churchill and they sent me through a renewal for £377. I did the price comparison and got this down by £20 to around the £350 mark. Out of interest I went into the Churchill website and managed to get the same cover as my renewal for £319.20. So I rang Nationwide to get a quote from them and this came in at £397.95 - a difference of £78.75, so with their refund promise I'd get £157.50 back.

Churchill have said they will match their internet quotation for me as all the excesses are the same and my circumstances haven't changed. Only thing is, they have to override my original renewal quote manually and pull the quote through from the internet. So once they've done that I effectively have to buy it there and then and can't get them to send me the details for this new quote as if it's been done over the phone. Nationwide stipulates that the cheaper quote has to originate from the same source i.e. telephone or internet, as the quote from Nationwide. How can I get round this one? I tried doing the quote for Nationwide over the internet but it came out at £358 so I'd only get £77.60 back instead of the £157.50.

Would it be best to buy both quotes and then cancel the Churchill one after sending all the documents to Nationwide? Sorry this is really long winded, but don't want to pass up this opportunity!

    Thanks for any help.

I'm not sure if this has been asked already - but can you take out a policy before the end of the offer date (31 October) with a commencement date later than this? My insurance expires on 17 Nov so I was hoping to get a quote from Nationwide and apply for it before end of Oct to start 17 Nov. Has anyone else done this successfully?

My next question is then does the 14 day cooling off period start from when I take out the policy - i.e 17 Nov?

Did you remember to add European cover to the NU quote - it isn't included by default
  • yep, added european cover, added standard courtesy car, and matched legal cover and excess (so I thought)

I'm being trying to suss this out and I think they may have disliked my partner's excess. I have £220 voluntary excess only, it turns out that my partner has £220 voluntary excess plus standard of £200 (inexperienced driver) which I didn't see when I took out the policy. Norwich Union only have voluntary for her. Therefore I can't match excess ???!!!

Not sure what to do now

From the date you receive the policy in the post I believe

Did they say they'd accepted your claim and that they were going to send a cheque? Seems very strange if so. I must admit I thought it was too good to be true and had a few doubts when I was waiting for the cheque to arrive, but there was no problem. I've seen some contact details further up this thread, and you could also write a letter to the same place you sent the price promise claim, as phoning their customer service or going into a branch is a waste of time as they just don't want to know

As previously posted - give her a call... I bet she loves me!!! :

icon1.gifThe Number To Call Them On....
*** I HAVE A CONTACT FOR CHECKING OUT YOUR CLAIMS ***

After many phone calls and lots of time on hold I have a direct contact for someone that knows about the claims.

    These are the details:

    Name: Rachael Laidier
Position: Manager of general insurance Marketing (Nationwide)
Working hours: 9am-5pm (she's just gone home)
    Phone Number: 01793 657173

She was able to tell me my claim has been accepted on the 4th October and that a cheque for £279 will be on it's way to me in the next 7 days... (so in response to 'bigandys' question - they say 7 days but the original T+C's say 28 days from submitting the claim)

    Hope this helps...

    Simon
