I really feel for you! There is nothing worse than having to be near someone who stinks! I hope it's a sunny day so you can sit in the garden!

Like geekgirl said...Throw & cushion that can be disposed of once they have gone.

To be honest though if you haven't actually invited her i'd be tempted to tell them to shove off!!
Our 1st baby is due 29th December 2007! :rudolf:
I'm hopeful that this get's me out of cooking Christmas dinner!

Baby Ruby arrived after 55 hours of labour & an emergency c section on Christmas Day at 14.41 weighing 6lb 6oz...And yes I did get out of cooking Christmas dinner!!:rotfl:

Why not when shes round have a wee pampering session. Tell her you know how difficult it is for her to wash her hair after her op and offer to do it for her. Why not put a hamper of goodies together, deodarant, soap, shower gel, bubble bath, body spray, shampoo, conditioner etc, doesn't have to be expensive. Wrap it up and tell her you won it in a raffle and wondered if she would like it as you have lots.
Strike up a conversation about a friend who has a teenage daughter who has hygiene problems and how she can't get her daughter to understand why if you don't bath everyday and wear clean clothes you begin to smell, even if you can't smell it yourself. Say something like "you know whats its like when you haven't had time to shower that morning, by lunchtime you feel wiffy"
Have a throw on the sofa, remove all cushions, have the windows open and have sented candles buring. If anyone complains its cold, just explain you its letting fresh air in.
Its not easy, and although I appreciate what shellsuit says, its not pleasent, her personal hygiene will not only affect her relationship with family, but also with friends, work, social life etc.
You don't have to be nasty when you do it but sometimes if the subtle hints don't work you may have to be more direct.
    Good luck.

Can't your OH have a quiet word with his mum? I am assuming that your SIL's mum would be worried to think that there may be something wrong with her daughter, tbh if that was my daughter I would have mentioned something a long time ago. Okay your house might be a tip but there's no need for poor hygiene. IMHO, if there's anything like this to be said it should be mentioned by close family, no offence meant to you but it's potentially a delicate situation and if you mention something you may run the risk of alienating your OH and some of his family. Does your OH thinks she smells? The best thing your OH's family could do is to mention this to her gently and point her in the right direction. She does sound like something's not right like a self esteem problem or depression, it's not a normal thing to wander round dirty and stinking. I hope this helps and you can get something sorted before the weekend.

Is it possible that this is perhaps a psychological problem rather than just a physical one? Maybe she is ill?

I think its a bit of both to be honest. She had several warnings from her Manager in work (she works in a Nursing Home) over her personal hygiene as residents relatives had complained.

This sort of bucked up her ideas for a few weeks but then it was back to normal.

Apparently she has always been like this. The family have tried alsorts over the years. OH and his sister have cleaned her house ,bought her new clothes etc many times over the years only for everything to end up stinking again.

The rest of the family are very clean and I think they've just learned to put up with it. Her Mum knows theres a problem but I suppose you have to loosen the apron strings at some stage and SIL is 37.

Both me and her sister have tried this. The stuff just never gets used. Being totally serious her bath has actually got a thick coat of dust.

My problem with it all is I have 2 boys 8 and 10 who i'm obviously encouraging to shower reularly and smell nice and they aren't daft they know their Aunty smells ........not really giving them a good example

While they`re at yours, can you keep sniffing the air and saying " Whats that smell ? its awful " ask if anyone else can smell it as well! She might just take the hint or her mum will.

She knows she smells, she sprays herself constantly with cheap body spray which ofcourse doesn't really help.
