  • Lidl do a lovely herb one which is nice because it's not too minty. Tastes more like minty aniseed. They do a normal one too. Both are about 50p so worth a try.

My friend's Nanna told us during the war they used soot and salt!! salt for the cleaning and soot for the whitening! Never tried it myself but let us know if you do.

I tend to buy what every is on offer.

The lot we are using at the moment is tescos all care one. Big tube for about 67ish pennies.

I try not to buy the really cheap toothpaste. Because I think the slightly better stuff and using a battery operated toothbrush helps keep down the tartar in my mouth and means that the dentist does not have to root around in my mouth as much. And make me cry and bleed. Did I say I hated dentists.

Mind you iceland where doing big tube of colgage for 50p. I manged to snaffle 4. 1 for me and the rest for my mum.

    Yours

    Calley

  • Thanks everyone - We have a Boyes and a Wilkinsons in my nearest town so I'll try Ted's recommendations first. (You must live in my area, Ted - Boyes are a local store aren't they?)

I know this could perhaps go on the I wanna board, but thought over here I might get suggestions from a friendly dentist or two ...

Middle son (15) does not like mint. Therefore does not like toothpaste. He used to use Macleans Milk Teeth and was OK with that, but when he finally lost his last milk tooth I thought it might be a good idea to get him onto 'grownup' toothpaste.

I did find some Apple flavoured toothpaste, and he was OK with that (he doesn't really like apples) and I think I've seen a herbal one advertised (an appalling Euro-ad on TV?) but couldn't find either in Morrisons today.

His teeth are OK - one filling - but the dentist always says he doesn't really brush them properly. And I can't see him doing it any better if he doesn't like the taste of the toothpaste!

So, is there any reason (apart from street cred when he goes on school trips) why we shouldn't go back to Macleans Milk Teeth? or any other suggestions? I've bought him a fruity kids one today, but I'm really not sure he'll like that any better than mint!

A tomato sauce flavoured toothpaste would suit him down to the ground ...

I am like your son, I don't like mint. For years, I had to force myself to use normal toothpaste which invariably tastes of mint. Sometimes it makes me retch.

Last November, I was visiting family in Hong Kong and picked up this Crest Iced Green Tea flavoured toothpaste (it also comes in jasmine tea flavour) and it was brilliant! It doesn't taste of mint and is really refreshing. They were not expensive, about £1 a large tube.

Sorry I know this is not helpful as it is not available in the UK :( ... I just want to let you know that it is possible to get non-mint flavoured grown up toothpaste! If you happen to have friends or family living in or travelling to Hong Kong, it might be an idea to ask them to get some for your son. Crest in widely available there in all supermarkets and pharmacy stores.

    Hi Sue,

There is a brand called Kingfisher, who do a Fennel flavoured toothpaste.

    Kingfisher

They do fluoride, and fluoride free. Go for the fluoride stuff though.

    Found an online shop too!

I have no personal experience of either.

Now they are putting more fluoride in kids toothpastes again, he wouldn't be harming anything by staying on the Milk Teeth brand though. Other than his street cred, as you say ;)

The important thing is the brushing more than what's on the brush though.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

When I was a kid, you could get Weleda herbal toothpaste.

I have also seen baking soda toothpaste in some shops, not sure if it has mint in it though.
