You've downloaded a rogue AV pretending to be Avira and got infected, go here and follow the steps:
http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=133269
And only download direct from the Avira site (http://www.avira.com/en/avira-free-antivirus) or if you're uncertain if you have the right site use a reputable download site such as FileHippo (http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/)
JDPower says he is locked out of his computer so he won't be able to download http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php or anything similar. I think he needs a computer tech. to attend to it and get it restored to a point before he downloaded the virus."0844 COSTS YOU MORE"0 -

Good point theloft. However, I think he should be able to get somewhere if he boots up into safe mode.0 -

Sophos have an online scanner at their site sophos dot com, however I have only used the downloadable version.
Need to register and its aimed at Businesses.
By far the best a/v I've used but unfortunately they dont appear to do a fully fledged home user variant.
A shame as its a UK company and an extremely efficient a/v.
Used to have it at work until the Macafee bods dazzled the non-IT managers with a lower price.
Now our pc's frequently hang up while Macrappie does its scans.
With Sophos AV, it writes a small hash to each file on your pc then checks the file to see if its been altered.
Clever enough to know if its system writes or if its a rogue proggy trying it on.
Hopefully they will do a consumer version of their AV, its the simplest and least intrusive of any AV I've come across and would be ideal for non tech-heads.0 -
Hi everyoine, I think i have the same virus so I've tried to follow the instructions on the main thread but malwarebytes just won't install? it's weird, when i go in to try and change the name of the file so that it will run, there's no .exe file to change? I can get onto here on the laptop via IE but not firefox?0
