    Hi all.

However on AVG 9 I couldn't find the option to disable it at all. I tried the help and right click in taskbar nothing.
    Thanks all.
This free program will uninstall any program - I have used it for several years without problems. I use the free version which is adequate for my needs. Then you can go to AVG website and reinstall.

I think I need this elsewhere but you guys seem to know what you are talking about (unlike me)! Sons laptop acer aspire 5520 (Sept 2008) went wrong Oct 2009 various things and now cant access internet at all and sometime wont come on at all. Is it the hard-drive, the motherboard or what? Now out of warranty and Tescos not interested (bought on CC)! I am loathe to write off £600 without a good try or a fight with the big guys! Any help greatfully received and please move if this should be elsewhere.

    Hi CaptL
You haven't provided enough information for anyone to be able to help you. Also, this is the wrong place, but I can't move your post. I would therefore suggest that you start a new thread in the techie section. Provide as much information as possible about your son's laptop i.e. hardware setup*, OS*, security programs you have, what things went wrong, if/how you fixed them, etc..
I'm sure someone will then try and help you.
    :)

*this might be standard with the laptop. I know very little about laptops. It would appear to be a dual core tl-58 processor running Vista, but it can't hurt to have that info. in your post.

TOG : I am currently running with Vista Firewall, Ad-Aware, & Spy-Bot, but in a recent Spy-Bot scan it indicated a malware, but it could not remove the problem. Can you recommend a good free malware remover ? Also I saw a post on here somewhere, (not this thread) for Sandboxie - www.sandboxie.com Have you heard of this and would you recommend for a non-techie? I downloaded it, but it looks very complicated.
    Thanks once again. theloft.

    Hi theloft.
This thread should help you with malware issues. There are also a few threads about sandboxie. Here's one which has some useful info. and links to another.

If you don't understand what an ONLINE SCANNER is, then don't post in this thread!
Try editing something like the following into the first post:

This thread is for free online scanners, which run in your web browser - NOT installed software like AVG and so on. The online scanners are useful because certain infections prevent software installing or running correctly.

The title is one of those things that only makes sense when you already know about online scanners. Most people probably don't even know you can do a scan via a browser. Even if they do know it's an easy mistake, plus people tend to miss details when they are panicking that their computer is messed up.

******* is the only one i have found to be the best
Even if this isn't spam (which I'm sure it probably is) it's neither an online scanner OR a decent AV
  • It is not spam... and i am really sorry for not leaving a longer post, i was honestly only offering a recomendation... nevermind :(
  • Its really well and good works with fire fox and make sure you have to installed quick heal anti virus for scan.
  • This thread reminds me of TrojanScan which is also a good online scanner.

I'm not sure where to ask this but here goes....

My Norton AV is due to run out soon. I didn't buy it, it came with the laptop which was a gift. Anyhoo, do I need to uninstall it before I can download one of the free AV's? I haven't a clue which one to use. I predominantly use the lappy for internet use and save photos on. Any help in SIMPLE terms:o very much appreciated.
