My ironing board was bought by my mother when she first married in 1956 so it is 53 years old. It is all metal and quite large compared to most modern boards. Although it looks a bit battered and has spots of rust on the underside it is well made and sturdy and I can't see me ever bothering to buy a newer one. It's had a few covers in it's time and is due a new one, and I have considered giving it a respray, but I think that's as much as it will need.

What do people think, do these replacement covers fit snug, or are they never as good as a new ironing board with included cover???

I put an old towel under mine. I prefer to iron on a padded surface.
I also trim away any excess fabric at the iron stand end leaving the cord sides intact for pulling and gathering the cover underneath.

A picture of my ironing board is in post #60 Click Here

When I got married in '73 a friend of my grandmother gave me her old ironing board to tide me over until I could afford a new one, it lasted me until two years ago when it finally rusted through, that's 34 years, I was trying to make it last forever!!

How interesting that today I came across some alarming news about ironing boards and then coming to the forum I should find this thread!

Anyway, I read on a women's mag (I think it was Good Housekeeping) that some ironing boards made prior to 1990 might contain asbestos!!! If this is the case, you need to cover yours in a thick plastic cover and let your local council remove it as hazardous waste.

I am not going to take any chances and will buy a new one today. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news!
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I don't own one or in fact, even own an iron. I just hang my clothes on the airer and they all seem to dry crease free.

    What's an ironing board?

I'm definitely with Squeaky on this one! I do have an ironing board, which is probably about 15 years old, but I haven't used it for years. I dry all my washing on or above my Rayburn, so it dries 'ironed'. Shirts get hung on a hanger and hung from the Laundry Maid above and the creases just drop out. I LUUUURVE my Rayburn :j:j

  • Ours was a wedding present too - 21 years ago. It was wobbly from the beginning but I put up with it because

    1) it was a present
    2) I hardly ever do any ironing
    3) it wouldn't be eco-friendly to just throw it away.

It still has the same cover, too. Very 1980s
