Its not always a good idea to keep old ironing boards as they used to be made with asbestos in!
  • A tip for buying new or replacement ironing boards - get the widest one you can find, afford or lift. With a wide board, you don't have to move the item being ironed so much.

PS. A lot of modern ones are mesh, as this is used with steam irons.

Gosh I thought mine was old at 15 years! I bought mine when I first got married with some Argos vouchers someone had given us. I bought the widest biggest one I could find and I think I've only replaced the cover once. It has metal airing lines underneath it which is I use to either put ironed clothes on waiting to be put away, or I dry a few bits over it.

Mine is about 12 years old, but prior to this, I had my Gran's old one which was at least 40-odd years old. I only replaced it because it had quite a small surface area so made the hideous job take even longer!
  • Our recent ironing board is only about 2 years old and it was a really wide one from Ikea. Before then we had the one we were given as a wedding present. It was held up by a giant screw as the fitting broke abotu a year after we had it but we used it that way for about 18 years.
I only iron my husbands shirts and trousers for work and my kids school uniforms. Everything else is comes out of the tumble dryer practically crease free.

I had my board as a wedding present in Sept76 (also have blue plastic mixing bowl from then) - sadly outlasted my marriage. Doubles up as a cat bed if I leave it up as it has one of those heat reflective pads under the cotton cover, which is a bit of a pain as everything ends up covered in fur.
Other old things I have is an ottoman which was parents (I am over 50) which I use for all sorts of things - ottoman(!), spare seat, footstool, cat bed(again), coffee table - and it is just the right height (and solid enough) for me to stand on to paint, hang curtains, reach the tops of cupboards etc., and I also have my parent's bread knife.
  • My mums must be...wait for it... 50 yrs old!
It's a handmade wooden one. She's just had different toppings to it over the years.

Mine's is around 3 yrs old. It's hardly ever used if I'm honest. I'm not one of life's ironers.

Current one is 9 years old as the last chipboard one broke and could not be mended. I did mean to make a new cover today so shall do that tomorrow.

My mum is still using her first board, and it is in excellent condition even though it is over 50 years old, they married in 1956 but she used a blanket on the table at first while they saved for the 'extras'! It is metal, sturdy and solid, was designed to be recovered easily - I aim to inherit it!

Mum's board is still going strong: 53 years old & counting :T

No asbestos, but a good collection of flannelette sheeting as padding!
I can cook and sew, make flowers grow.
  • Mine was 22 years old but just replaced it as i got a new steam genorator iron , shame as i think it would have gone on a few more years.
