Since my post last year re. asbestos, I have had my ancient (20+years and asbestos ridden) ironing board collected for free from the health and safety people.

It was replaced by a brand new and very snazzty Brabantia bought on sale at half price (around £30) - it has made the ironing experience really much nicer, it is much higher so there is no backache and it is much more manageable. And more importantly it does not poison me with asbestos!

I would have liked one of the old style wooden ones but they are quite expensive to buy new, so I shall keep this one and hope to make it last for the remainder of my lifetime.
Finally I'm an OAP and can travel free (in London at least!).

I had one that was given as a wedding presant in '95 which lasted until we moved to our current home (moved in 2005)..it never did stand quite straight for some reason! There was a larger ironing board left in the cupboard under the stairs in our new house! So I ditched the wonkey one in favour of this "new" one. I guess it was already at least 10-15 years old going on the colour of the frame and cover and it finally went to the tip last year when the legs snapped off. I now have a small table top one that I got from ikea and hangs nicely on the wall so its still very new! Here it is...

I got one when we got married in 1993 and have just got a new one from my Mum for my Birthday. It's a Minky one and it's huge. It's got a black frame and a black and white flowered cover to match my kitchen and utility room. I saw it at half price in Homebase and they had a 10% off day so I told my Mum and they got in then so still a bit MSE.

  • Mine must be approaching 10 years old; I acquired it 4 years ago. I had to replace the cover, thats it. I hardly ever use it though!
  • Mine's 40 years old this year - a wedding present. I don't iron very much, but the thing does seem to be pretty indestructible. It's a metal one. I did replace the cover about 20 years ago.

My board is 26 years old - its a Brabantia and still going strong! I got it as an engagement present, it has survived TWO marriages! Just shows, Im luckier with ironing boards than I am with men - maybe there's a message there, Hmm! ;)

mine is nearly 9 years old. it was an engagement pressie from my mum. didn't know when you got engaged you get showered with gifts from friends an family i was so chuffed. There is nothing wrong with it and it is used alot. but i am thinking of changing it as it is very narrow and i quite short so ironing king size bedding is a bit awkward. but it can be done so it not a major problem if i don't change it for anoher 9 years.

Mine is about 5 Months old, but only because I moved from my rental and had to get a new one- that one was about 10 years old and was still going strong.

This one is new fangled but it took me four days to work out how to put it down and STILL didn't get it until a friend came to visit and she showed me how to put it down DOH!

Okays I am not sure exactly how old is mine, but my darling MIL gave it to me when I was first married 32 years ago,and SIL used to play at pretending the thing was her boyfriend and she was soooooooooooooo in lurve with him ( yes! I married into this bonkers family, which i love to bits) Now SIL is now age 60 and MIL told me her mum had bought the board for her. MIL passed in 2000 age 81. Cor I miss her.
When I got it (It's a wooden one) it still had an asbestos iron plate rest:eek: Which I replaced very quickly. It now resides with us and is still used, and is covered with the brushed cotton sheet that was used on the cot belonging to my now 28 yr old daughter.
    See I am a real old styler:D

My mum's is the same. :D

My gran got it in 1939 when she married but we aren't sure it was new then - just about everything gran ever had was second hand or handmedowns so there is a chance it might be older. The asbestos plate has been replaced. and I have lost count of how many covers it has had on it. Heavy and a not very tall ( but then Mum is under 5 ft) and still going strong. It is also the best shaped ironing board, my modern one is severely lacking in comparison.
    Put the kettle on. ;)
