May I join in too please. Not really in debt but I spend every spare penny. I kept a total last month and it was over £500 on clothes/hobbies etc. Tried to be better this month but think I have spent even more so far. The sales were on you see and I did need the clothes I bought. Also ordered a lot of craft stuff on line which I can't honestly say was actually needed immediately although it is all delicious stuff and will be used in the months ahead. I don't think I actually waste money as I don't buy !!!! but when I replace things like clothes etc I do buy fairly expensive items. The challenge for me is that now I have my wardrobe sorted for the next year at least and enough craft stuff to last quite a while I need to stop spending any more money and start saving instead. Trouble is spending is a habit and saving isn't so how do I change?
Mortgage and Debt free but need to increase savings pot.

Don't despair, sohurt, there's hope for you yet! You're obviously still very much hurting, so the spending is just an outlet for you. To get you out of the habit I'll happily total up what you spend on 'non-essentials' each week and post it up here! Don't really think that shaming you into curbing your habit is the best way to go though! It'll come when you're good and ready xx

I'm getting a pretty big bonus in my part time job this week and I'm worried I will fritter it away so probably going to be visiting here more! I've figured that Friday nights are the worst for me because I work on the Sat am so can't go out and tend to just go a wee walk around the shops buying buying buying. Maybe I could go to the shops and maybe only buy one thing? x

Welcome Ches (and No. 48 of our merry band of spenders). 'How do I change?' is indeed the question that we've all asked ourselves! Some people may find that 'fessing up on here and having me shout at the helps (or maybe they just won't 'fess up anymore!).
Well, stick with us, and I'm sure we'll find a way through this!

Time for a puzzle from me;

Yesterday I had £75 in my purse, today I have £20. Where did it go?

Answers on a postcard please!

I think you really need to change your whole mindset, but until you've healed that's not going to happen (I'm speaking from experience). It's no good going to a shopping centre and saying 'I'm only going to buy one thing, because the next thing you know; 'Oh, but those shoes will go really well with that top', and 'that's the perfect necklace to go with that top and those shoes'. Up until yesterday (don't ask me where the money's gone, I don't know!) I had managed to convince my self that the shops were the bad guys. They have to really justify themselves to me before I part with my hard-earned.

As for my missing £55;

£17 on takeaway
£10 on cigarettes
£10 on a top-up shop at Asda
£10 on petrol
£5 into a gambler (OH borrowed, will pay back, I don't touch them!)

I'm just so disgusted with myself that after all my hard work I can dispose of £50 so easily. I suppose that's a good sign?

My mindset when buying clothes and shoes is 'cost per wear' so I can justify the price. So if something is £200 but I know I'll wear it at least 10 times, that's £20 per wear. laughable really. Anyway maybe we coudl try and think of 'cost per hour' or something, i.e how many hours would I need to work to afford it? x

Part of the Furniture 1,000 Posts Name Dropper Combo Breaker
Can I join pllllleeeeaasseee??

My name is Millie and I am a compulsive spender:o

A few years back when I had more money, I used to splash it on nice clothes, stuff for my horses etc

Now I am studying again and therefore poor, I don't do this, but I still "waste" money on cheaper stuff.

I actually get a buzz out of doing my weekly food shop, how bad is that?
When I do have any spare cash, it gets frittered away on junk...agghh

So what do I need to do? keep a note of everything I buy?

Thanks

Hello ladies ( I THINK we are all ladies - funny that..!)

Had friends over for takeaway last nite so hence no (invaluable?!) input from me!:D

Anyway just been catching up on your woes and...

TMD - I wear (smart) jeans with and to everything! I have horrible legs so cute little dresses with platforms just don't cut it with me (i wish they did) but this means i always end up wearing jeans - trousers occasionally. The last wedding reception i went to I wore v dark skinny (well slim :p ) jeans, a rather nice Oasis tunic top/dress (which i bought in the sale and was reduced from £60 - £10!), a nice necklace/beads and of course heels! Now this wasn't a particularly "posh" do, but i looked ok! We went to Claridges for dinner last year (don't ask!:)) and I was panic stricken when i found out i couldn't wear jeans - in the end i wore slim leg black cropped trousers (ankle length) and .. a tunic top! (which was in fact £75 from moonsoon and so far only worn the once...) Anyway, if any of those jeans you bought were dark and slim leg (i think they look "posher!") then i would go with that or the black trousers. Where is the "do"?

Sohurt - you need to stop! I thought I was a shopoholic but actually I'm beginning to wonder (althoughy my debt says otherwise!)- i may have bought several different pairs of black trousers of the years, but don't think I've ever actually bought a pair only to discover that i have exactly the same ones (with tags on !!!) at home :D

I agree with CS,the shopping is obviously helping your healing heart or so you think or are hoping, but in fact is it? Will being in debt and miserable make you feel any better - I doubt it. Sorry, don't want to be mean - just trying shock tactics!:D What about the old buy and return? You know you buy the stuff for the thrill then take it all back and get a second thrill when you get the money back? (but please tell - where did you get Manolo's for £65???!! I neeeeeddd them!)

Welcome Newbies - I'm pretty new myself and try to give constructive advice but usually it's just pretty much nonsensical ranting!

Anyway, my spends so far since yesterday (when I have started a new budget) are as follows:

£8.99 dog food. (will last over a month)
£6.99 supermarket (beer for friends and couple of other things)
£10 son pocketmoney
£7.99 new cover for patio set (wind tore old one to shreds and figured 7.99 for a new one was better than patio set rusting then HAVING to buy a new one!)
£28 - takeaway.

The budget for the week is £200 (food, petrol and whatever else) but we are going to try to stick to £120 ish (except if we are having a big weekend) and the extra we are hoping to save. £200 seems like a lot of money but as SH has demonstrated so well, it's easily spent!

Quite weekend this one and next but going out on 5 April, by which time i should have so much money left over from the next two week's budgets that i can afford a whole new outfit for the occasion! (not that anything will fit me after the amount of chocolate that I am intending to consume this weekend!)

Have a great Saturday! :D x
• Hello

Hope everyone is having a good Easter weekend. Well I've done it again. it was payday on Thursday and I've been shopping

On Thursday night I went to my friends Jewllery party and bought two necklaces for me. They are really pretty but I spent £34  Its not like I can afford to go out much to wear them!

Yesterday I went to Wilkensons and spent £30 on washing liquid, fabric softener, tissues, decorations for my living room and two tins of gloss and a tin of cupboard paint (I'm taking that back though as my Mum has talked me out of painting the kitchen cupboard doors and into saving up for new ones, shouldn't be too expensive very small kitchen :p )

I then went to buy some curtains for my bedroom and living room as I am redecorating my whole house this week (Mum bought me the paint for listing lots of stuff on eBay for her :D Thanks Mum) and popped into Woolworths to see if they sold curtains and came out with a bath sheet and a hand towel, they were half price though and came to £10 :o

I then went to Argos and changed my mind about the living room curtains and bought some slightly more expensive ones (they are lovely though) I spent £62 in there  (whihc isn't bad really as my living room curtains are 90 inch by 90 inch and the bedroom ones are 66 inch by 54 inch so not small, and both pairs are lined!) I did get a £5 voucher as I had spent over £50 :D Now seeing what I can buy :p

I am hoping to have a fairly cheap week as I will be busy decorating. I am having my Tescos shopping delivered on Tuesday so am hoping that I won't need to go food shopping for a month.

Oh no the Brantanos advert is on the tv new for old shoes I will resist I will resist!!:rotfl:

Right I had better get on with painting the bathroom.

Enjoy your day
:EasterBun
