Just noticed that I have a star! What is that for? It must just be the amount of posting instead of work that I am doing, cos I'm not aware that I've given anyone any moneysaving advice!

Also need a signature of some description - did I mention that I am £120,000 in debt?

Still smiling tho - as I said in another thread, I refuse to get suicidal over owing money to corporations who have more money than I will ever see in 10 lifetimes! Someone suggested I hadn't had my proper LBM - think they might be right.... But I am trying (v. trying I know :p )

Ok so theres a thread on another forum saying how DeVere hotels are doing easter deals for £29 per night! Now I know that this is an amazing saving but considering I don't actually start my new job until 31st march and have only £100 in my current account (£400 with OD) I really shouldn't. O just to explain about my dismal finances, Im 23, finished uni last yr and went travelling until feb this year :D

So I've had the booking window open now for about 2 hours...I would love to treat my boyfriend cos like a lot of you on here I am one of those people that loves to buy stuff for other people and see their faces!

Should I do it or not??!

I'd say do it! But then if you look at my other posts you will see that I'm probably not the best person to ask ;)

I'm definately a DF "Wannabe" just dont know if i ever "Willbe"!!

Depends on your personal ccumstances - if you have done well on the debt busting this month and can make sacrifices in other areas to pay for it - do it! The stallwarts I am sure would say "think of reducing your debt by £29" but I seriously beleive for us "spendaholics" if we don't have a little treat now and again we will fall of the wagon big style (I know I will anyway!) Can you ebay anything to help pay for it (blimey I am changing - would never had said that a few days ago!)

If you truly think you've worked hard and you deserve it, the go for it :D
  • Hello I think I need telling off! I needed to get some cash today and instead of going to the cashpoint I went to Tesco and bought chocolate (raspberry's covered in white Belguim Chocolate but rapsberrys are part of my five a day aren't they ;) ) and teacakes and got cash back as well.

Now I only spent a couple of extra pounds on this but I feel I may be at the top of the slippery slope again, today chocolate tomorrow shoes clothes bags you name it. And chocolate does not do my diet any good I starting to put weight back on

There I have confessed all and feel much better now :A thank you

    Not everyone, t.m.d!!!!

Hey smiffy, interesting dilemma! I think I agree with Loopylu. I know that in the past I wouldn't have even thought twice about spending a load of money on something like that. But, I think that because it's a serious bargain you'd be mad to pass it up, and maybe you can offset it elsewhere - sell on Ebay, sacrifice something else. It's not great anti-spendaholic advice, but it's the best I've got. Would you like a 'Spendaholics Anonymous' number by the way?!

Snap Little Miss Shopaholic! I did something like that too! Instead of getting £20 out to pay for my cigs I paid on my switch card and got £20 cash back - £25 out of my account instead of £20  . BUT, I'd like to think I made up for it last night. I went out with work to the greyhound racing, it was £15 for a ticket (already paid last month), and you got three bets, two drinks, and a meal with it (BARGAIN!). Overall for the night (with some very carefully placed small bets) I came out 30p up! So, no spends for last night :j !

It's for number of posts LoopyLu! I think you get one star one your 30th post, and two stars on your 200th. You don't think I got my stars by giving money saving advice do you?!?!?!? LOL

Have a good day one and all,

    Hi,

I went and did a little research, and indeed discovered that my star was for posting - def not for money saving!

The weekend is coming up and what will we all spend? I thought I was getting paid next Thursday but actually is not until Tuesday after easter weekend and I have £79 in my account (well actually £79 of my overdraft left!) and about £35.00 in my purse. (was £40 but bought costa coffee and choc twist for b'fast this morning!) Oh yes and will have another £18.80 with CB in bank a/c on Tuesday. Blimey I'm minted!!

Anway, not going out over weekend but have a birthday pressie to buy and the question is: will I use my cash or will it go on my CC? I have discovered that I cannot part with cash. For some reason even if I have it in my purse and want to make a purchase it either goes on my cc or dc - i think cracking this will be a BIG step forward and is also a very big reason as to why I am in debt. It must be a physcological thing as why I feel I have to hold on to cash?

So to set myself a little challenge, I will only spend what is in my purse (in cash!) over the weekend (yikes, coming out in a cold sweat already!) especially as just remembered I also have to buy wine to take to friends tonight and if they have an offer on (don't they always?) will i be able to stop at just one bottle or will the old 3 for a tenner (and the lure of my cc) win out as always? (and sometimes it seems sensible to buy 6 doesn't it ;) )- maybe i need to visit the "Giving up Alcohol" thread too - or maybe not - my life's not going to worth living when i start my dmp as it is! :D

Will be purchasing said items at lunchtime so will let you know how i get on :) xx
  • Those offers are a pain arent they!!
I havent been around for ages- see you are all doing fab though!
I had £20 in my purse on wednesday, it was meant to go in the holiday fund.... I have £2 left. I bought a present for friends new baby, t shirt for nephew for easter and have frittered the rest. Oh on the good side, I have been ebaying, not done too good but its paid for my new curtains! Just waiting for the money to transfer across. I'm going out on Sat night, we have siaid it will be a cheap night but somehow someone always suggests cocktails and I love to feel like I'm in sex & the city or something! Have a good weekend everyone!

Don't do it!! £29 a night, 2 nights? plus dinner? plus petrol to get there, before you know it you will have spent £200!

    Stop and think!!

I think there needs to be some serious think before you spend going on here! At least smiffy came here to get support before buying. I think it's funny that we laugh and joke about our purchases but seriously is it acceptable for someone who has £40k worth of debt to spend £200 on some designer gear? Especially when probably already have several similar pairs of shoes/bags/cosmetics etc.

I think we're all a bit to forgiving here and the thread is losing it's purpose, it's turning into a "oooh look what i've bought thread", and it serves no real purpose.... the only benefit is that it makes me feel better about my lack of spending and i really thought i was a spendaholic, but it appears i'm not actually.

Sorry to be a party pooper! >slopes off to hide!
I'm just a seething mass of contradictions....
    (it's part of my charm!)

Of course Maz, you are quite right, but clearly some us find it very hard to simply go cold turkey on the spending. It is an addition in the same way that smoking and drinking are. If we don't smoke and drink (well not excessively on the drinking front;) ) then surely what other DFW'ers are spending on ciggerettres and alcohol, we spendthrifts can be cut a bit slack for, for buying a "non essential" occasionally?

We all know we have a problem and have been grown up enough to admit to it, so it can be a bit dishearterning to be "told off" everytime you slip up.

I think the banter on this thread is intended to be lighthearted and it helps me keep my debts in perspective - yes they are horrific:eek: - but I have a loving family, a secure home and my (and my families) health - things could be a hellava lot worse.

I don't think you are being a party pooper - we do all want to try and save money after all, it's just that it comes more naturally to some (and I don't think we quite fall into that catergory - yet!) But we are all trying :o

For my part, I already know that I will not be using my cc when I go out at lunchtime for bday pressie and wine, so even tho I am still spending money, it's not adding to my debt (not reducing it either i know) but for me that is a big step forward. :)
