  • I signed up to a 24 month contract 12 months ago with T-Mobile for their mobile broadband because at the time where I was living I was unable to get normal broadband. It worked at my old address with no problems at all, albeit it was a bit slow! In January this year, I moved to a new address, only 5 miles from my old address on the other side of the town. My T-Mobile mobile broadband does not work at my new address at all. I have contacted them on numerous occasions regarding this and they will not release me from the contract - so I am now paying £15 a month for nothing... Help? Is there anyway out of this, as a I have already paid this for 6 months without being able to use it and I've got another 12 months to go and it's ridiculous! They suggest I sell the dongle and the contract to a family member, but I've got no-one who wants to buy it and what would happen if that person defaulted, would they come back to me for any outstanding amounts?

Unfortunately they do not guarantee 100% coverage and there is no comeback if you move to a blackspot.
You can sell the dongle on to a trusted friend and the DD can be moved to another account, but as the contract is still in your name, it is you they will be chasing if the payments are not maintained.

t-mobile do offer a change of ownership where the full contract is transfered to another name providing they pass a credit check so the original owner would not be chased or have there credit rating affected if the new owner defaulted on payment

It's frustrating but the OP really has no chance as T-Mobile are within their rights.

Three things they may be able to do.

1/ If they have a mobile phone with T-Mobile, which is at the end or near the end of contract, they could at the end of the contract, threaten to leave T-Mobile and they might have some bargaining power to get a reduced tariff if they stay.

2/ If they have an old mobile phone which will accept the sim they could pop the sim into it and at least get mobile broadband when they are out and about. This could also mean if they pay for having mobile broadband in a phone contract already, that they could remove it and save some money.

3/ Finally if they have a mobile phone contract with another company, at the end of the contract they could switch over to T-Mobile (although they probably wouldn't want to) and they could bargain if they sign up for a mobile contract, that the mobile broadband is reduced or even free as part of the contract.

Most home broadband companies will make a charge for moving or not even allow it within contract. With mobile broadband I'm not sure we will ever see anything but what the OP is experience, because the clue really is in the product name, mobile meaning not static and used in only one place.

another thing you can do is convert the plan over to a phone contract when i was working for t-mobile i had this type of query/complaint from customers in the same situation what i would do is change the plan over to combi 15 100 mins unlimited texts and and apply a one off £10 credit for goodwill this could be used to cover the cost of a basic payg phone not exactly the outcome most people want but at least your not paying for something your not using
  • Hi all

I took out a 24 month contract with T Mobile internet which i was talked into in January this year when I was in their looking at laptops.

I got the laptop and one of those stupid internet dongle things which had horrendous signal and I don't even use it anymore as I have a Virgin package for my tv which inclues broadband.

I pay £34 plus vat per month for this, plus £15 or so in some kind of geek squad insurance.

    This doesn't end til January 2011 !!

Is there anyway I can lower the tarriff as I don't even use it and is it a good idea to keep paying the insurance or to cancel this? I do use the laptop regularly.

You could have probably cancelled it in 14 days but not 8 months later. No chance now. I would cancel the insurance if you can, as £15 x 24 months is probably more than the value of the laptop. But bear in mind that if you lose the use of the laptop for whatever reason, you will still have to pay out the contract until the end of term.
If it's theft insurance, then you can put it under your household policy for a fraction of that fee anyway.

  • no it's if anything goes wrong with the laptop then its fixed for free.

    i will cancel this.

i didnt think there was anything i could do about the contract but worth asking!

My daughter took our granddaughter to a t mobile shop to purchase a pay as you go dongle, and to be honest knew nothing about them, it resulted in my daughter on being told how good the coverage was etc it would be better to purchase the dondle on contract, which she did, as she was assured this was cheaper, and on looking at the figures yes they were right, anyway on returning home my grandaughter tried the dongle but it did not work, they went bak to the shop 2 days later and was told that the lap top must be broken in some way but the dongle was fine, they came home with the dongle (my daughter is not very assertive) and still tied to the 18 month contact of £15 p/m A work friend of my daughters the said to check the coverage herself, so she checked from the t mobile site, typed in her postcode and it stated sorry but no coverage in your area, I know she should have checked herself before buying but didnt, but surelythe shop are also to blame as when the contact was took out surely the post code on buying this item would have shown that she did not live in an area covered by them??

After a long winded battle and email exchanges with T Mobile they've agreed after six months of the contract runnig to cancel. They have additionally agreed to re fund some of the line rental. The biggest bit of generousity was she gets to keep the laptop!!!

It would appear that my Girlfriends post code was checked at the time of the sale. T mobile operate an internal and external system. The internal system stated she had good recpetion and the external one said poor. We have quite a few agrument convinicng there was a desciptiancy.

The whole customer service experince was disgusting, the case was only resolved when I threatend to stop the standing order, and issue a ccs demading a refund of the whole line rental.

By issuing a ccs, it prevents there credit contro6 departmentsl contacting you or leaving makrers on your credit file as it could be constrruded as intimediation
