lol... Yeah, it is better to take a phone when upgrading so long as you know you can sell it for more than £100, so do some research on e-bay to find out how much a particular model is selling for.0 -

I was on o2 online liesure 25 - 1000 off peak minutes 500 texts - £25 for 12 months.
Id seen £35 a month, half price for first 10 months, 400mins + 100 texts 12 months at dailaphone and quoted o2 this offer.
They went away and came back with an offer:
500mins + 400texts for £25 for 12months - worked out to be £55 more than dailaphone's offer so i said no, she went away again and came back a better offer:
The same offer as before but for £20 a month, so i'm on more texts and minutes than dailaphones offer and it's less! dailaphones offer works out to £245, o2 works out to £240 so i've saved a fiver!!
As someone said before, its down to luck and that luck has alot to do with who you are talking to. The lovely lady i spoke to was called Yvonne...
Oh, when i first tried to upgrade to the k800i i was told there would be the 89.99 charge because my last contract was only £19 a month, that is why i went with the liesure tariff so it would be free.
When i just rang she's put me a tariff that is only £1 a month from my last contract and there was no mention of the £89.99 so i've dodged it!
Good luck Noz!
Hi azza87,
I think I did okay for myself.
Simiar situation to yourself, haggled them from the £89.99 for the handset and not a great deal monthly, to free handset and 250 x-mins/500 txt for 12 months at £22.00.
It suits me down to the ground as I get more each month with minimal difference to what I actually pay.
Thanks for your account and advice!0 -
Agh....
Not going to be easy this year to get a good deal.
Last year got 200xnet min, 400 txt, (O2 200) which included international travel service, 100pounds credit as I didn't upgrade, for 15GBP.
I've been travelling abroad since May so have been only using my text messages. Haven't gone over my allowance at all (forgot I had rollover mins and txt!)
Rang O2 today. Basically they've said I haven't been using my phone at all, and offered me some stupid basic package of 25mins and 25 txt for 13gpb or something. Tried to tell them I need my text messages and I need the travel service - they did pick up on my roaming - and that 4 txt credits = 1 txt message when abroad....But they said they wanted to find the right calling plan for me.
I tried asking what they could offer for 15gpb but of course the answer was nothing.....!! I don't mind spending 15gpb, my calling pattern may change within the next year once I make it home, and if I don't upgrade my phone (which is a little difficult for me to do even if I wanted to!!) then some credit would be good.
The lady I talked to was quite agressive in telling me that O2 wasn't going to offer me a cheap package that I wasn't going to use... Maybe I've gotten too relaxed about life to handle dealing with these type of people at home!
Oh, do o2 like it if they get money out of you but you don't use the package...? Meaning if I didn't care too much about getting the 'right' package for me but got a package that I was happy paying the money for... does that make sense?
Anyway, any ideas how I should play this over the next week or so (fingers crossed skype works well enough in siem reap to make a sensible call without getting cut off!)Today was just my inital 'testing the water' call so I wasn't expecting a good deal, though I wasn't expecting such a **** deal either!
At the end of the day, I can change network - I'm meeting my brother in Feb so he could bring out a new sim card for me, my o2 contract is up at the start of Feb. Admittedly I don't know how I could sign a contract and get a direct debit of my credit card to pay the monthly bill on a new sim.... Still I suppose I could always get the sim in my brother's name and pay him.
Maybe I should be looking at pay-as-you-go sim?
I've been with o2 for maybe 4 years now.
Any suggestions?
Ta very much.#96 of the Norn Iron Club

Sor, which department were you talking with - did you speak to retentions?0

To be honest I have no idea as I got bumped to 3 different people, lets see.. got bumped to upgrades first (not sure why) and then to someone who said (not asked) that I wanted to cancel my contract - something that I hadn't mentioned at all.
My call quality from here (Laos) was quite rubbish, but I believe that was O2 messing around as I've called my friends and family from here and have not had any problems hearing them - couldn't hear the first coupld of people in o2at all!#96 of the Norn Iron Club

Can't really comment on the line quality Sor, it might just have been a bad line.
The reason I ask (as outlined in Martin's article) is that retentions are the guys with the power, so you can haggle them down.
The sales department simply state what's in the catalogue so to speak and will try to find the best tarrif for your usage, not necessarily discounting any of them.
When you ring back, make sure its retentions you speak with.0
