T-Mobile Retentions

the scheme was abused but they still brought it back again with a life discount. Its only since the summer (with a brief suspension of the scheme) they removed the life discount - my guess is that it is the sign of the times, life discounts were expensive to the company. My best friend has the life discount and hes struggled with getting a good upgrade. That said, his phone was stolen two months ago with over £200 of international calls made. They were nice enough to remove half the bill at no cost to him.
As for the g1 vs iphone. I've borrowed a jailbroken 2g iphone on t-mobile from a friend and quite liked it, everyone wanted to have a go when they saw it. However I must say I've got a G1 now and I love it. It doesn't look as sexy as the iphone but as a google user it wins hands down. If you dont use google then it is isnt for you. When I say google I mean, gmail (including contacts within),google calendar, google talk(gtalk). It is quite google orientated to the point that when you turn the phone on for the first time it asks you to setup a google account or enter your google details. A lot of the stuff is seamlessly synched with your google services, even the phonebook tells you who is online and who isn't.
Lots of nice apps too, shopsavvy is as good as reviews say. Went into comet today to get a picture frame, scanned the box in 2 seconds and was told where to get it cheaper online within about 3 seconds.0 -

This isn't the best time of year to upgrade, its coming up to end of the financial quarter and networks need to show good performance. I do not work in finance but I expect that the networks don't want to pay out on subsidised handsets at the moment because they won't make a profit until you are several months into the contract/upgrade.
Therefore I think January is a better time for a customer to phone up as a new phone range will be out and also the networks will want to offer better deals. Right now I can see why they just give you 'teaser £5 discounts' to keep you sweet until the next quarter/january.0 -
Tmobile retentions have been useless to me (I dialed 150 5 3 then disconnect options to get my PAC code). I have 2 contracts with them , one is up on 9th Jan £25 pm never over, one in Feb £25 never over.
I wanted a samsung omnia phone (offered on websites for Tmobile), I can get one on O2 from dialaphone (no cashbacks other than quidco) for £30pm, orange for £30pm from phones4u in the shop. TMobile wouldnt even OFFER me the phone. They offered the android G1 which I tried for a couple of days but it is fairly rubbish so its on its way back (nice phone, nice keyboard, nice screen, excellent trackball but no *useable* applications, no exchange connectivity, no offline office docs, silly messaging system, no IM clients other than google - give it a year and it will be a good platform). I tried ringing 3 times and met the same stonewall, even tried emailing but I got a shrug off "As we pay towards the cost of all the phones on our network, we only offer upgrades as a bonus. ". The last call wouldnt even bargain (probably looked at the previous call notes) so I was resigned to cancel BOTH contracts at the end. The G1 offer was identical to the website so no offer really.
However.... Ive just found a non-cashback deal (other than quidco) on buymobilephones.net (who are tragic at cashback so ive heard but remember this is NOT cashback) for a combi25, 300mins+300t + web n walk for £30 phone is free. So what are TMobile playing at? I dont want to go with them over principle but it looks like im going to cancel my existing £25pm contract and take a new one out! (I may have priciples but im not stupid) Then negotiate my feb contract for less with luck.
Seems I am back with tmobile but through getting a new contract. Im not too bothered about keeping my phone number but I suppose I could try porting to a free orange Pas you go sim then porting it to Tmobile (not sure if you can do that)0 -
Argmengar, this is an age old issue between new customers and existing customers. They are paid for differently and thats why you get different deals.
As I said if you wait till Jan 1st you will get a different upgrade deal, or go somewhere else and get a "new customer" deal at any time you please.
Even new customer deals won't be as good as they will be in January, new financial quarter. It is a bad time to purchase, Christmas doesn't seem to register with mobile networks who are very concerned with their performance on paper.
Watch this space 2009-10 will show the networks fighting to retain existing customers because the new customer market is drying up, the average British person has 3 mobile phones.
Edit:
Must admit I am sold on the G1 love it, and have done research. Outlook support is coming immediately, 3 apps coming to support it. AK notepad is an office app, and there are loads of IM apps for MSN, AIM etc, even for google talk. I know the G1 doesn't look as nice but seriously the market for apps is growing very fast every day.0 -

If you are on the old for life friends/relations plan then yes. If you are on the new one then only on Solo 30 and above. My father is on flext35 plan ..12 months into it ...is he allowed to change talkplans? On some networks i kno you can upgrade but nt downgrade
Yes he can except Solo. He can only move to a Solo plan when hes up for renewal. He would of course not get a new phone.0 -
I heard yesterday that TMobile are offering G1's to staff members for a 1 of payment of £49.99 which most of them are doing and sticking them on Ebay.
Must be desperate to get rid of them.0 -

On the staff line upgrade only, which you need to have had for a year. Also £49.99 is the preowned price, a new one is £100~*Cerenia*~
