Even worse deals then whats on there website.

    can't wait then
  • any advice -

been 02 customer for 8 years on same number.
currently have 400 mins and 1000 texts (don't use that much)
got this on 24 month contract for £20 per month (took whatever the free handset was at the time)

my contract runs out this week and i would like a new smart phone and preferably a cheaper price/deal

i really struggle with the phone and being assertive with haggling type stuff. anyone know of existing deals or quotes or how i can go about this. i was going to go through the online upgrade until i read about 'retentions' being likely to score a better deal.

    thanks

Don't worry about being assertive, plenty of the retentions advisers aren't either ;)

Have you got a phone in mind that you'd like?

My advise is go on the o2 website, start the upgrade process and find out what it's offering you with that phone then have a look on vodafone.co.uk, orange.co.uk and tesco mobile and see if those offers are any better. Call up o2, just say you're thinking of leaving as you were going to upgrade online, but it only offered you x, but you've had a look at <other network> online who are offering y to brand new customers so you're wondering if they can do any better and you're pretty much guaranteed to get offered something better than you would if you done it online.

You can usually get a better deal just by asking and having some sort of target that you'd like to get, yeah, if you're good at haggling you'll normally be able to get something slightly better, but not much, especially when it comes to price.

O2 don't pretend to be the cheapest, they try and market themselves as a bit of a premium brand compared to other networks and make a big deal out of giving better service than other networks, they'll generally price match voda and orange, sometimes tesco (although not as much), they generally wont bother about the likes of CPW and P4U, but from what I've seen serious haggling tends not to knock the price down as much, it'll just get added extras like free o2-o2 calls or free landline calls added.

o2 may like to portray themselves as a "premium" carrier, but they don't have a premium network to match. Locally, their network has gone from hero to zero - and this is in a densly populated urban area, somewhere o2 should be aiming to grab customers. Network availability is patchy at best, with countless small blackspots (never used to have any), internet speeds are abysmal, even on the odd occasion you can get a UMTS OR HSDPA signal, data connections altogether reguarly become unavailable at peak times, and every time you complain, o2 ask you put it in writing, and respond with a generic template "we are always stiving to increse network speeds and availability blah blah".

I travel all over the north as part of my job, and the network is becoming less and less "quality" and more something you would expect from a carrier in a developing country (it reminds me of using IDM in Lebanon back in 2005). It comes to something when their own CEO critisized his own network, and its speed and availability a few years back...
The CEO of O2 UK, Ronan Dunne, has apologised for the poor performance of its mobile data network since the summer, especially in London. Dunne admits that the operator’s network was simply unable to cope with the surge in data usage by Mobile Broadband and iPhone users, though improvements are already working their way into the system

I'm not going to be upgrading, after 15 years as a loyal Cellnet/BT Cellnet/mmo2/o2/Telefonica o2 customer. The work phone is running on Vodafone, and has absolutely zero issues locally, and I cannot say I've noticed anything major on my travels. The missus has a "Three" contract, and it tears o2's "premium" network to pieces - and I pay more each month (£35 vs £25), for far less (600m vs 2500m), than she does!!

Regardless of which, as o2 are in bed with Apple, and don't want to be seen dead promoting any other handset (they screwed over Palm, they are trying to screw Nokia right now in favour of Apple) than the iPhone (last time it was a battle to convince them I didnt want an iPhone), and as I'm looking towards the Nokia 710 (only WP handset I can see on the horizon with actual buttons instead of capactive buttons lol, plus its a good looker), which o2 probably won't carry, there is practically zero reason for me to stick with them. !!!! network, !!!! pricing, !!!! handset range. Only their broadband service is worth keeping, and even that is a load of codswallop nowadays if you're a new customer (thus subject to pathetic limits and traffic-shaping policies - which means I can never change my package as I'm still on one of the original packages lol.).
  • thanks for advice.

i did the phonecall today and i tried the approach of i've found x elsewhere - (i did, at Three - this was £20 per month for 300 mins with a free samsung galaxy w.)

02 retentions offered 21.50 per month for 200 mins (offered extra 02 mins but no use to me, i dont know anyone else on 02) and pay £60 for the new handset.

what they offered is actually worse than my present contract which is 400 mins!

not sure what to do. i get the really good broadband with 02 which has unlimited downloads for 9.50 per month. if i leave 02 this will increase by £5.00 per month so i guess i have to factor that into any deal.

ideally i want 400 mins, some mobile data ( not loads, the odd google search here and there) and 300 texts for less than £20 per month.

02 said to me on the phone that if i don't take the offer then i may as well go with three or whoever i find as they wont improve their offer. i've been with 02 ever since having any kind of mobile phone so i am bit miffed that they cant be bothered to try and keep my custom.

    At the moment I pay O2 £10.21 a month for 150 minutes/300 texts/no data. I'm on a SIM-only one-month rolling contract.

For the same price, T-Mobile's offering 300 minutes/300 texts/unlimited browsing + 500MB of download in exchange for a 12-month contract.

My main goal is to get some mobile data. Does anyone know what kind of deal I could get from the retentions people?

    Thanks.

has anyone found a good deal on samsung s2? i wanna ring o2 retentions but wanna see what my options are

I can upgrade from today so have been looking at what I can get. I currently have a blackberry curve 8250 with unlimited texts, 100 mins and no data for £18.50 a month.

I did want the HTC Sensation but o2 don't do it, so looked at the Samsung S2 instead. As an upgrade I could get that for £24 a month with unlimited texts, 300 mins, 100mb data for 24 months and a free phone. This is by far the best deal I can see as other operators were charging anything from £31 upwards.

However! This wasn't my first choice phone, the HTC one was which I can get with 3, Orange and Tesco mobile for the same price as the S2 but with more minutes and data so I'm trying to see what deal o2 retentions can do, but their systems are currently down so need to try calling later.

I'm hoping for either more data and minutes or ideally the package they are offering but at a cheaper price, being a student and only working part time I need all the savings I can get :rotfl:
    Saved: £1566.53/ £2000
