I called up for my PAC on the 24th of June only to find out that my min 12 months were up on the 25th of July so I was a day too early. The CS girl asked why I wanted the PAC and I stated bluntly that I could not afford it anymore and wanted tp port to a payg sim.She told me to call again on the 1st of July because they would then have my account details and be able to offer a deal to me. I don't know if she was b*llsh*tting me but it seems at odds to the responses that most have been getting this month from retentions. Perhaps they have felt the expected customer backlash and will be forced into backtraking after only a month.
It will make no difference to me as I am still going to go (unless I get a deal costing a couple of quid per month - fat chance)

That's interesting. Maybe the new month will bring a new set of lenient deals.

• Well, so far no reply from Matthew Key, Chief Exec of O2, but that was to be expected really.

I did get my PAC code from O2's website customer thingy though, which is helpful.

Vodaphone never did ring back, so I'll just hang on a bit more and see what other deals there are, at least I know from this that pretty much all mobile phone providers are as shoddy as each other in terms of customer service at the moment!

1st of July - will be interesting to see if o2 do start doing the deals again
• indeed, I'm off in a sec to see if there's any deal on the High St.

in the meantime I mailed the following addresses at O2 re: their attitude to retentions and customer service in general:

'matthew.key@o2.com'; 'customerservice@o2.com'; 'complaints@o2mail.co.uk'; 'complaintreviewservice@o2.com'; 'mycare@o2mail.co.uk'

dunno if anything will happen, doubt it somehow now as after 9 years I ended my acct with them last week

Just came off the o2 upgrades services since I knew I'd get straight through to them with no waiting. And the VERY best deal the lady could offer me was:

18 month contract
30 pounds a month

which included:

600 anytime mins
1000 texts
unlimited web
unlimited bolt on of my choosing

with a free 5800 [since I asked for that]

She even said she was pushing it with what she could offer me so... Oh and they will not do a 12 month contract which includes a phone, she was talking about getting 100 pounds credit but it worked out better to have the extra 6 months, not entirely sure what she said.

I even mentioned the 20 a month deal that Three are doing with the e71.

Guess I'll be asking for my PAC code next time I phone up and get an N97 from Three =D

Did you try Retentions? They have more leniency and can offer you better deals. Upgrades usually quote the normal high street price.
• Here's the Vodaphone deal I was using as 'currency' in my discussion with O2:

http://shop.vodafone.co.uk/shop/catalog/compatiblePlanListView.jsp?dependantSkuIds=sku1300025&phoneType=post&skuType=phoneSku&selection=null&initialFilters=flt_paymonthly&_requestid=89727

1st July at O2 doesn't seem to have made any difference!

Just rang o2 this a.m. as a customer of 7 years. Asked for a deal on any of the Blackberries - not able to do retentions deals on this. Best they were able to offer is a contract for £25 on a Nokia E71. 1000 texts, unlimited o2 to o2 calls, unlimited web and 400 mins. Declined because I wanted to sell it and get an iphone, and overall it only saves £40 if you get it for that purpose. What with ebay costs, potential for it not selling very well and the wait involved if I do it this way, I decided against it.

I went with MSE advice on iphone 3GS, 18 month initially £44 reducing to £34 - saving myself (if cashback deal comes through) £65. :) I'm happy with that.
2008-2011: £23k of wins
2011 best win: my wedding ring :o
2012 best win so far: iPad 2!!!! Holiday to Austria (given to family member) :j also £100 & 2 wine cases
Thank you so much, all posters

Nah not yet thats the next step, I know when I phone retentions I'll be waiting for a long while on hold. Plus be better to let them cook over it for a while. It's a great shame since o2 has been bought by telefonica the quality of service has been gradually decreasing and the fact that they are pouring all their subsidy into the iphone.

The o2 forums are moaning that they are going to lose many customers by not doing any good deals with the n97 or other similar phones.
