pash - I have just made this rainbow baby for my godson (who loved it). I got the pattern for free from her website www.jeangreenhowe.com

here is a picture. It's the first toy i've ever made and the most ambitious project to date.

R.Mac - your rainbow baby is beautiful!

Pash - I just looked on Ravelry because they had a Dalek pattern on there but it's been removed. If I find one I'll post the link. If you look at the pattern books for toys on the Jean Greenhowe site I have most of them and could easily scan and post them for you. I love her patterns and adapt many of them to make as gifts.

I've just found this link to a Tardis pattern! http://www.instructables.com/id/The-Tardis---knitted and there are loads of toy patterns here http://kimberlychapman.com/crafts/knit-gallery.html. The Dalek pattern is shown but not available. I have just read that it breached copyright laws so I don't think it's available anywhere. I'll keep a look out for it!

R.Mac - what lovely bootees. And the rainbow baby is fab. Can't believe how well you've done since teaching yourself to knit:T

Haven't posted on this thread for a while, as I haven't knitted anything since I did the HTA squares. I've had a half knitted baby cardigan sitting there for some weeks now, so really should make the effort and find the time to get it finished :o

r-mac - Well Done with your bootees and rainbow baby. You've done really well to come so far so soon, you must be really pleased with yourself. Conquering a new skill is a great confidence booster isn't it?

My own knitting slowed up a bit at the weekend when it was so warm and I started doing more card making and gardening, but it's cooler now so must get those pins clicking as I have that huge stash to reduce.

I want to have a go at that pattern next. :p but I have seem a few easy shrug patterns for myself I am fancying! I might have to persuse the nearest wool stockist to see if I can find the right colour!

It was your painter doll by JG that made me do the rainbow baby!:T

But, going to knit a couple more preemie hats before starting anything else. :D

    hi kayleigh

going to find a couple of links and will be back asap.

ok. first thing is you need to know how to get started. i think 5mm needles are a good size to start with. CAn you tell us anything more about your wool - it should say on the paper band what type it is?

Now, you have to learn to cast on. Watch these videos here http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/cast-on
I find the alternative methos called the thumb method easiest.

use your needle and wool and practice until your feel comfortable.
then cast on say 20 stitches.

then you need to practice a knitting stich. see here http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knit-stitch
I use the english method as they call it on that site.
practice this on your 20 casted on stitches and see how you go.

once you have reached the end of the row of stitches swap the needles round and start again.

once you are comfortable, try doing several rows - this will allow you to see how the knit stitch forms a pattern - called garter stitch.

Once you get better you can make a scarf - cast on as many stitches was you want the scarf to be wide and just knit as many rows as you want the scarf to be long.

or you could knit squares and use them as dishcloths.

ask us (or rather those who are more experiences than i am!) any questions and post pictures of your efforts :D

    Good luck x
