Hi Greenpixey, you'll soon get the hang of it.
Ok - M1 means to make one stitch, you can either pick up the loop that is lying in between the two stitches on the left and right needles and knit into the back of it to make an extra stitch, or you can knit into the front and back of the stitch (which I do). So you knit into the stitch, but before you let it off go off the left needle you knit into the back of it too. The idea is to increase all the way along the row.
The work without shaping bit means, just do 2 rows in the stitch pattern without any increasing or decreasing to keep the same number of stitches.
Sorry for the very long answer, but it was the best way I could think of. HTH

Hi Acey, I am Bella and I too think those action men look great. We had the smartest Action Men in town 30 years ago it's so good to see the patterns are still being used.

    I have pm'd you.

hello. Have read upto the end of page 8 of this thread, but saving the rest when I have a bit more time. I'm pleased to have found you all. Moliere and Martyn's knitting challenge make me pick up the needles after many years. My mum taught me the basics when I was little and now, about 15 years on I am finding that i love knitting. I have taught myself to cast-on, castoff, increase and decrease, make stripes and yarn forward to make planned 'holes'.

I have been knitting preemie hats and innocent smoothy hats. I managed to make a pair of booties for a pregnant friend and have to sew them up now - have got some links to show me how. Hope it works!

Also found the free jean greenhow link for a rainbow baby and making one for my godson - nearly finished the body and I only started at lunchtime :D

I really want to knit him a jumper/cardy/hoodie/tank top type item, but all the patterns have complicated stiches in them. I have tried and tried, but can't get rib or moss stitch to work for me. Has anyone got a really simple patter I could try. I have trwled the internet but can't find one I think I can manage.......?

    thanks x

Hi r.mac, I'm the same as you in that my mum and nan taught me the basics when I was young and I've recently decided it was time to start knitting again. My first project has been a scarf for my OH ready for next winter in rib, moss and cable! I found knittinghelp.com's videos really helpful for getting the hang of new stitches, the videos for moss (seed) stitch and ribbing are on this page http://www.knittinghelp.com/videos/knitting-tips

Can anyone recommend an easy baby cardi/matinee jacket, suitable for a girl, in double knitting?
The patterns I've got all look quite complicated. I'd like it slightly more interesting than garter or socking stitch - bit lacy or something but as I've not knitted for years, it has to be easy to follow (and quick to grow  )
    Thanks
