I have also used machine-knitting wool as 4-ply. I had a knitting machine years ago but found it took the pleasure out of knitting - it was certainly too noisy to knit and watch TV or hold a conversation at the same time! The only places I ever see the cones now are charity shops so I don't think the machines are that popular nowadays.

    Morning all.

Thanks you Bella and Kathy for the answer. I have seen machine cones on Ebay but will have to check if they are DK or 4-Ply. Have to go into town to buy some white wool from Sue Ryder its £1.19 for 100g.

Hi Pink - your clown is fantastic! I did one of the clowns for my youngest who is now 26 and is hanging on to it for when he has children! I love all the Jean Greenhowe characters; she's very clever, isn't she? I wanted to make one for my 8 year old grandson but he thinks all clowns are scary! I recently adapted one of her patterns and made two tiny dolls as presents - I'll try and post pics of them a bit later. I have loads of her pattern books so if you ever want to make any other characters, I can send you the books or scan the patterns and email them to you. I think we could open a separate file on Yahoo just for our own personal projects - I'd love to see what other things we are making!

MAYTAURUS - thanks for the link to all those lovely patterns!

That is fantastic Pink.1970. You did such a great job. Never in a million years would I be able to do something like that. You are so clever.
Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia. ;)

  • Wow, Pink - that's fab!

I gave in to temptation and signed up to Ravelry, but have managed not to get addicted yet (need to find my way round a bit more first).

Does anyone have any ideas what search terms I could use to find some patterns for larger girlies like myself? I did do a cursory search the other day but didn't get anywhere.

Youngest son has been off school for half of this week as he was poorly, which gave me the motivation to pick up his socks and continue knitting while I nursed him (man flu at age 6 - gotta love it!). I've got 12 rows left to do before I start on the toes, so with any luck I shall have them finished this weekend. Have spotted some nice yarns online that I want to make stuff with, probably socks for me next if I can't find any other nice patterns.

Ooh, I shall give them a try ...

Almost finished the socks now, just got to graft the toe ends together and they'll be done, and young MasterPops can wear them tomorrow.

Learning to knit I sometimes have trouble understanding some of the instructions even on the easy patterns. Can some one kindly explain the following:

Row 1: Cast on 11 stitches (leaving a length of yarn about 6 inches for sewing up later) (I understand this bit)
Row 2: Purl (and this bit)
Row 3: K2, (*M1, K1) 8 times, K1 (19 stitches) *M1=make one, (Dont get this at all... Make one what??)
    Row 4: Purl
    Row 5: K2, (M1, K1) 16 times, K1 (35 stitches)
    Row 6: Purl
    .......
Row 23: change yarn colour and work 2 rows without shaping (what does "without shaping" means?)

Sorry for asking but I couldn't find any website that explained it to me :o

The pattern I got is from here: http://littlecottonrabbits.typepad.co.uk/free_knitting_patterns/knitted_easter_egg/index.html
