I'm hoping someone can help me with this question....
Instead of using circular needles to make a stocking hat can you just use straight ones and follow the pattern as it is, or do you have to change it in any way?
You could probably do it with a bit of mathematical thinking. If it's stocking stitch, instead of just knitting rounds you'd have to do a knit then purl row, back and forth as usual. I think you have to add on a few extra stitches to allow for seaming as well.
I made some mini sweaters that were supposed to be knitted in the round but I did them on straights, I'm trying to remember what I did. I think shaping translates ok too, just try and imagine the hat flattened, does that help at all?Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Hi OrkneyStar, I've just come back from a week's holiday in Orkney (I was born there and lived in Stromness until I was 9).
Anyone heading up there should check out Wool and Wine in Kirkwall because they sell off the yarn Tait & Style no longer need for their products at very reasonable prices. I got 530g of laceweight yarn (masses) for £5.30. Most of it isn't labelled and doesn't have much info about it but there are some lovely colours.
Where is Wool and Wine located ?Ermutigung wirkt immer besser als Verurteilung.

Thanks for your help MsChazzer and pol. I found some circular needles in the right size, have never used them before but I'm giving it ago. Seems to be working ok so far.

In between the two Longship shops on Broad Street in Kirkwall, sorry, should have said! You have to go down a passageway and it's in a kind of courtyard, used to be Ola Gorie's workshop. Hope that helps!Got married 23rd May 2009, many thanks to all on the Weddings and Anniversaries board for their help and support!

Hi, everyone,
I am back after some time off knitting and am still a newbie in terms of technique... but today in John Lewis I saw a lovely bag knitted in Noro Kureyon and thought I need to re-start my knitting!! :jIt was a bag similar to NK-183 in this page:
http://www.woolneedlework.com/Pattern/Noro_Yarn_Books/Volume_22_by_Noro.shtml
except that this one has cables and the one I saw had simple knit / purl combination in the edges of the colours (sorry if I cannot make myself clearer)

However each yarn is £4.99 everywhere I look for 50 gr and I believe I read somewhere I need 3 yarns  . Is there a way to find this cheaper?
Thanks in advance.0 -
Hello,
I've never posted on this thread before but would like some advice from you experiences MSE.
I can knit very basic stuff - squares mainly. My problem is that I just cannot get my head round patterns. Too many abbreviations! What could you ladies and gentlemen suggest I start with - I've knitted a patch work blanket, a square jumper and scarves but that's it. Also where do you pick-up cheaper wool as it's soo expensive in the shops.
Any advice would be great. Sorry, you must get loads of questions like mine.
Thank you in advance.'Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.'

Thank you. I will look those up when my baby daughter has her sleep and see what I can do. I will also look up the charity work you do - sounds fantastic. :A

Thanks mioliere!! The postage is only £1 up to 10 yarns so it is a good website to keep in my favourites list. Much cheaper than some ebay retailers. However I only plan on getting a couple of yarns, so I might just get them at John Lewis (if only I could get enough points at Pigsback for another voucher). The handbag looks lovely and the one I saw was in colour 163, so different shades of blue. Pity I cannot get it cheaper...0
